Total Time = 1h 09m 57s
Overall Rank = 73/307
Age Group = M35-39
Age Group Rank = 5/11
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 5 am; breakfast of oatmeal, wheat bread with peanut butter, bananna and gatorade. Arrived at the race site around 6:15 and got set-up.
Event warmup:

Short run of about 1/2 mile; no pre-swim warm up.
Swim
  • 07m 37s
  • 350 yards
  • 02m 11s / 100 yards
Comments:

I could not settle-in to a consistent breathing or stroke "groove" during the first half of the race. Once I rounded the buoy for the trip back to land, I just said to myself "I'm a better swimmer than this; just swim, damn it!" So I did. I need to settle down in the water. Need more OWS swim practice with 10-50 of my closest friends! That said, I was very pleased with how I placed in my AG and overall in terms of the swim time!
What would you do differently?:

More OWS; more self-confidence in my swim training.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Was pretty efficient; did not put socks on for bike (put them on in T2 for run; worked alright).

Bike
  • 31m 4s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I need to work on hills more; great bike course --scenic and challenging.
What would you do differently?:

Work on hills
Transition 2
  • 01m 10s
Run
  • 29m 9s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 09m 22s  min/mile
Comments:

I need to run more --especially off of the bike. I also should try to run or bike the run course before the race because it is nice to know where I am going and how far the course appears.
Post race
What limited your ability to perform faster:

Limited hill workouts on the bike; did not run enough prior to race, but still was pleased with results.

Event comments:

Good race; great venue. The transition area was split up so the short course athletes were on one side of the transition and the long course athletes were on the other and each side was divided by snow fence; first time I had seen that done and it seemed to work well.

Course: some paved trail, mostly paved road; partially shaded; flat is some spots, but some small hills. The course winds through the YMCA Camp, then out and around part of the soccer field, then on to a lake road. You head out on the lake road in one direction, turn-around and then head back along the lake road past the point that you entered it, and the road just seems to keep going. Eventually, you hit another turn-around point and then go back the way you came initially.
