Run
Comments: I crossed the start line two minutes after the gun sounded. I was staged in Coral #6. The first mile was crowded, as is typical in any large run, especially coupled with the fact that were running through some narrow city streets for the first couple of miles. I was running with two other members of my running club, and we clocked an 8:40 first mile. After things spaced out a bit, we were clocking 8:00/ 8:15 minute miles. Third or fourth mile we actually clocked a 7:40! I had a prediction time of 1:50, which equates to an average pace of 8:23 minutes per mile. I was running faster then my prediction pace. I was doing fine until mile 11, when I could feel a blister forming on myright foot. I also get some weird pain in my left hip on long runs. I think its due to my crappy running technique. It started to flare up, and quite frankly, the last two miles weren't fun, but I managed to keep my pace at 8:00/ 8:10 min/ miles. My ankles were tender, as were the bottoms of my feet, but thats just the stress of running 13 miles. What would you do differently?: Honestly, nothing. I drank an ate the right amount before hand. I stopped at most of the water and accelerade stops, and took gels about three times throughout the run. I think I had the nutrition nailed down. The blister issue is a concern. The moleskin patch I used "slid" on my foot during the run exposing the problem area, hence the blister. I have to used some duct tape of something in the future to keep the moleskin in place. My longest run prior to the race was a 7.5 miler about two weeks before hand. I think I have to do a couple of longer runs in the future. I think my legs were ready for the stress as well as they should have been. Post race
Warm down: I stop. I take my chip off. I walk around in a daze for ten minutes. Thats about it. I drank a bottle of Accelerade and a bottle of water, and took an Excedrin. Then I came home and housed a meatball sub. What limited your ability to perform faster: The first mile, the crowd. But it wasnt bad because everyone else in my coral signed up to do the same pace as me so I didnt have to dodge alot of people. For as much trouble as the aches and pains I had at the end of the run, It didnt cause my pace to slow. Event comments: The weather was chilly to start, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. The course was excellent, the organization was superb, we started on time. There were plenty of post race food and drinks.... I cant complain. Last updated: 2007-09-16 12:00 AM

The night before, I got all of my race-day stuff together (shirt, arm warmers, shorts, HR strap, extra battery for the MP3 player, four gels, extra Excedrin, hydration pack)
Day of, I got up at 5:30 am, ate a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, and took two Excedrin. I threw a couple of extra songs on the MP3 player. I put some moleskin over the spots on my right foot that always give me blister problems. I also slathered some BenGay on my legs and then waited for my ride.
Warmup? HA! Here's my race strategy: first mile is a warmup, then I run a 15k, then I cool down.
We arrived at the race site at 6:45 am, walked two blocks to the staging area. I ate a banana and drank a half a bottle of water. I found Magella- we hit the porta potties, which ate a good bulk of our pre-race time, and then we headed to our respective corals.
