Pre-race routine:

Got up early to get all my stuff together, fill my fuel belt, make my gel, prepared my bagel and jelly for the ride. I left for the race giving myself more than enough time to find parking and such. Once I parked I put the seat back and just took about 20 mins just to relax. Located my teammates, walked over to the start line, we all had to split up and go to our assigned corrals. I was in corral 5 due to the fact I wanted to finish in the 1:45- 1:50ish range. This time would give me a PR. When I first signed up for this race I really felt I could nail this PR with no problem, but my IT band came back and I haven’t been having great long runs lately. I am training for the Philly marathon and I knew that was the long term goal, so if the PR didn’t happen it would be ok.
Event warmup:

not much of a warmup... had to use the time i had for my stretching of my IT band, and find a bathroom -- tree

Comments:

like most large races it's tough to find room to get yourself going, which at the time i was ok with since it keep me in check and would let me get into my groove, but would hurt me later. The first 2 miles were like 8:45 and 8:36, i missed the 3rd mile mark so that messed up the 4th mile split as well. I am guessing i was a little faster on both those splits but maybe not that much. Once i hit mile 5 i was in a nice groove, my mile splits were between 8:17 -- 8:23, but more in the 8:19 area. I was feeling pretty good. As it hit mile 7 i started doing the math to see if i could get under 1:50, i knew it was going to be hard. As i hit mile 9 i started to feel a little uncomfy, i tried to stayed focused. I hit mile 10 and i was still keeping the 8:19 pace, 11 and 12 would be the same, the last 1/2 mile there is a very very slight uphill, i couldn't get anything going in this uphill, all i could do was hold the pace i was at, but i knew i had to run faster if i wanted the PR, i didn't want to look at my watch. I wanted to keep pushing and see what happens. I finally hit some level ground and even start going down hill, after the slight downhill you have to make a sharp right and head to the finish line. I cross in 1:50:09. A new PR for me, by over 2 minutes. Sure i would have love to see 1:49 on the clock, but i was more than happy with my time. I think if i did have all that early traffic i oould have broke 1:50 no problem, but i guess i had 10-11 miles to correct that problem.. I think i had a very good race.
What would you do differently?:

as always run faster. :)
Post race

Event comments:
