Pre-race routine:

Yesterday: ate a lot of bread and pasta, walked very little. This morning, ate my usual breakfast of bread, yogurt and a banana. I had another half banana shortly before the race started, and a little water. I also went to the bathroom twice! LOL!
Event warmup:

Some stretches, walked around with my daughter

Comments:

I felt like I could run forever! At mile 6 I got hungry (stomach growling) and Diane gave me a jelly bean. At mile 8 I was given a packet of Clif Shot Bloks (salty margarita) and that helped a LOT. I also used accelerade. I ran all 13.1 miles except for four walk breaks of one minute each during the last three miles. I finished at a sprint with Jen.
What would you do differently?:

Bring some food--I am going to need it. I am going to invest in some Clif Shot Bloks, those things rocked. They helped so much. I also would try to eat a little more early on, I couldn't believe my stomach was growling. Otherwise, I felt no pain.
Post race
Warm down:

When I stopped, my stomach cramped up (diaphragm actually) and my hamstrings started to hurt for the first time all day. I had to walk, stretch, stretch, stretch, stretch, and stretch. I ate some crackers, banana, lots of water, and half a slice of pepperoni pizza (mistake!). I walked some more, stretched some more, then took Advil. Kent gave me a short shoulder massage. A couple hours post-race I hosed my legs down for a couple minutes with cold, cold water, I continued to eat carbs then protein, then I took a 35 minute walk around town 5 hours post-race.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The fact that I never trained specifically for this half marathon. I trained for a triathlon, and expected to walk a lot of this. I actually performed far and away better than I could have dreamed. More food and more training will help me get even better.

Event comments:

I would have liked more drink stations, and more accelerade. We had drink stations every two miles...I realize every mile would have been too much but still, I'd liked to have seen them. The accelerade was only ever four miles--that should have definitely been every two, as far as I was concerned. I wonder if that was Accelerade's fault--were they stingy with the giveaway?? Otherwise, the staff was fab, the organization was fantastic, the post-race food was good (not as good as York Hospital's 5K though), and the field of all-women for this inaugural event was fabulous. I give it two definite thumbs-up!
