Pre-race routine:

Rode down to the race with my buddy Eric. We missed the exit and ended up arriving in Transition with about 5 min until it was going to close! Luckily, my transition area is very sparse, I don't lay out a ton of gear. Pupmed up the tires, hears it would be wet suit legal so I got that on and got in the water. By far the least amount of time I have ever spent at a race before the start and it was great! You have no time to dwell, you just go!
Event warmup:

Pumping up my tires and putting on my wet suit in order to make the start!
Swim
  • 23m 35s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 26s / 100 yards
Comments:

It was a nice swim. The wet suit ruling was a suprise, I would have perfered to wear the Zoot Speedsuit I will be using in Kona in 3 weeks, but I brough the Long John, so I knew I wouldn't get too hot. I breathed every 2 instead of every 3 strokes and tried to relax while pushing a little bit. I kept running into this guy on my right for the first leg, but got free of him at the turn, but then had to move through the ENTIRE womens race. That was tough, and I banged into a few of the women athletes. I wanted to go 22 and change, but this was ok. There were no wet suit strippers, although my buddy Eric enlisted a volunteer to strip his and I wish I had thought of that!
What would you do differently?:

Find a volunteer to strip my wetsuit.
Transition 1
  • 01m 24s
Comments:

Man, I BATTLED my suit! I ripped off my timing chip and had to put that back on, it was a mess!
What would you do differently?:

Find a volunteer to strip my wet suit!!!!
Bike
  • 55m 20s
  • 24 miles
  • 26.02 mile/hr
Comments:

I crushed the bike. I had the fastest split on the day for the second time this year at an Olympic race. I just sat on the left of the course and passed everybody. It was very crowded on the course as there was a Sprint race as well. I kept my HR in the low to mid 160's and just kept attacking.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Transition 2
  • 00m 51s
Comments:

I did a great triathlon dismount, standing on one pedal as I came to the dismount line, and ran into transition. Made sure my race number was good following the bike, got my shoes on and comfortable, visor on, and I was off.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Run

Comments:

As I was beginning my first lap, I heard the sound of feet sneaking up behind me. when I turned to see how it was who was about to put an early pass on me, it was a women pro from Chekoslavakia! She looked awesome. great form and stride and turnover, racing flats, the works. She was a TIMEX sponsored pro as well. She put about 10 feet on me, but then I seemed to stay with her. My heart rate was only in the high 150's, so I realized I was taking the first lap easy. It was fun to pace off of her for that lap, we even ran side by side a few times.
On the start of the second lap. my coach yelled at me to stay with her, as she was back in front by about 10 feet. I realized I had more to give, and pulled up along side and made the pass. I never saw her again until after the finish. I moved my HR back up into the mid 160's and pushed. I probably should have pushed the first lap harder, but it was fun to feel like I was finishing so strong.
What would you do differently?:

Run that first lap in the low 160 HR range, but I was having a lot of fun!
Post race
Warm down:

Played with my dogs and recieved a lot of well wishes from fellow athletes for my trip to Kona.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Nothing.

Event comments:

A 3min PR for the distance, but had I done a better T1, I would have had a sub 2 hour Olympic. next time. ;)
