Swim
Comments: Swim is my weakest link (uhhhm except for the future run - see below...) I have had a history of panic at the start. Not this time. I felt great the whole swim (one out of three ain't bad.) What would you do differently?: Slightly more warm-up. Transition 1
Comments: Good transition for me. Bike
Comments: I felt good going out on the bike which is a little new to me. (Thanks to my swim coaches who have really made a difference.) Felt good climbing my way out of the park. It was little chilly. Oh yeah, my bike computer didn't work at all. As a result, I relied on my stopwatch and used my heartrate as my guides. I tried to stay sub-threshold the whole way. This ride was TOUGH. The wind was relentless. I spent tons of energy fight the wind, and I would pay for it later on the run. I'm happy with my result considering the conditions. What would you do differently?: I would check my bike computer prior to the race. I would also LOVE to figure out how to get race wheels worked into my budget! Transition 2
Comments: Good transition for me. I don't mess with fancy hopping off and running in my socks. I'm usually a little shaky dismounting. I don't need any extra acrobatics to complicate the situation. Run
Comments: OMG, this was hard. This was harder than my IM run. The bike had taken a toll on me. I was fairly okay on the 1st loop - not happy by an means, but okay. The second loop was so mental. I had to will myself not to stop except for the aid stations. Usually at this distance, I only take in fluids. I was near cracking at mile 8 and decided that a gel would be a good idea. It was. It helped for a while. I ended up taking another around mile 11 just to get to the damn finish line. Thanks to some young man who ran with me from mile 12 on to the finish - it helped ease the pain a bit. What would you do differently?: Maybe more nutrition on the bike; maybe dial the bike back a bit - not sure - it was just tough conditions. Post race
Warm down: Completely stop and take in fluids. I was fine. What limited your ability to perform faster: My lack of preparation like I had wanted. Event comments: It was a fine race. Overall, the mental effort was as hard as my Ironman a few weeks ago. I learned my toughest mental lesson today. I guess you learn something new on every race. It was a great way to finish out this season. Last updated: 2007-09-25 12:00 AM

I'm just coming off of IM Louisville 5 weeks ago. That race took a lot out of me, and my work required me to travel 2 of those weeks. I was not able to prepare as much as I would have liked. However, my main goals for the year are met, and I'm happy about my season no matter what happens today.
I woke around 4:45. It was very chilly that morning. I drank an Ensure because I'm learning that liquid calories work best on my unreliable stomach. I then took a long, hot shower trying to relax. I put on my tri suit and prayed to hear the words "wetsuit legal." Drove over to the race site and did my usual setup - checking it a MILLION times. I drank water, coffee, V8, and downed a GU minutes before the race.
Short swim that had me shivering in the start corral.
