Pre-race routine:

this was all started by newleaf and the infamous Jingle All The Way thread. it sounded like fun and we formed a BT-Red and BT Green team to race. there was plenty of trash talking and it was something to look forward to and try to stay motivated for.
Event warmup:

i had an english muffin w/ pb and k and i drove down to the race. we finally found a place to park, picked up our packets and found the bt group. everything was really laid back and we just hung out and tried to stay warm.

scott (3558) said he was going to follow me, but he got there late and was still in the bathroom lines when we headed for the start. i lined up with dan (docswim24) instead. we listened to some opening remarks by mayor fenty (who was also racing) and the national anthem and then we were off.

Comments:

it was crowded to start, but the group was paced right so it didn't cost and time. i did get separated from dan almost immediately when a gap closed right after he moved through it. i was worried about my pacing though so i just slid left and tried to settle in.

i kept the pacing pretty even and as i approached the turn around, i saw ray from potomac river running who runs our speed workouts sitting in 4th place. it was the first time i had seen him run and he busted out an impressive 5:21 pace and a negative split. i made it to the turn around where i could keep an eye out for everyone else. i got to see a lot of our group and it gave me a little boost to push to the finish.

i made it to mile 6 and heard some panting over my left shoulder. i had visions of dan or scott sprinting by me, but as i glanced over, it was mayor fenty running me down. i made a joke that he didn't swim or bike so he should be fresh, but he was pushing really hard and started to pull away. i didn't have much left and knew he started in front of me so i let him go. it turns out he got me by 1 second! i guess he wanted it more. that's ok. i took him down at kinetic and i still smashed my 10k pr. we'll have a rubber match next year. :)

What would you do differently?:

nothing. great late season race.
Post race
Warm down:

we met up at the finish line and cheered everyone in. everyone looked great and once everyone finished it was too cold to hang around so it was breakfast time. we all headed over to crystal city pub for the breakfast buffett. other than sitting at a pool table with no leg room, it was a great time and good to hang out with everyone who could make it.

thanks to new leaf for setting it up and everyone else that helped out (ie. the green hats from jody were awesome! i think that's why we won!)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not training specifically for this race.

Event comments:

great 10k. bells on everyone's shoes probably drove some people nuts, but i thought it was great. plenty of people dressed up as santas and reindeer too!
