Pre-race routine:

Cindy decided not to do this race after hearing what the conditions were, so I really took my time getting up to the race. Had 2 eggs scrambled in olive oil and a slice of bread. Stopped by WAL*MART to pick up a pair of gloves. Drove up and parked west of the park.
Event warmup:

Ran from my car to the park. Stopped to use the Port-O-John. Saw Becki for just a while and talked for a while. She left to use the rest room and find her bro. Used the rest room 2 more times. Generally, just hung out in the concession hall trying to stay warm.

Comments:

Lined up just about right. Was able to keep just slower than target pace. Strategy was just to keep an eye on my Garmin and try and maintain a 7:41 pace. Focused and ran behind and to the side (for draft) of the next person in front of me if I was running a little slow, slowed a little and ran along side the person behind me if I was pacing too fast (downwind side). Seemed to work o.k. Saw my next door neighbor Mike at about mile 4. We talked for a while, and I told him to go ahead, I wasn't gonna pick it up til mile 5. Wind was WICKED running across the bridge. Almost like a false finish, cuz I was giving it all I had just to maintain pace. Had a strong kick at the end, but not enough for a PR.
What would you do differently?:

Line up just SLIGHTLY ahead of where I did today. Still had to weave through a few folks that misplaced themselves at the start.
Post race
Warm down:

Looked for Mike. We talked about house projects that were waiting for us when we got home. Walked through the feed line. Actually a good spread. ICE CREAM (Drumstick type), chocolate milk, Clif bars, Pearson Nut Rolls, vitamin water...(funny how I can remember more about the feed line than the race)...:):)

Walked with Mike to the car and drove him down to his car.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wind. I was trained for this race. A PR was well within reach with more effort, but I pretty much decided beforehand that today was not a PR day. The season is just beginning...NO injuries...

Event comments:

What a day...wicked wind and SNOW! Great course and well organized.
