Swim
Comments: so during the foggy, body-ridden wavy swim I thought - gee I am going to do an Olympic?? shoot in 2 weeks my ocean swim is twice as far??? ACK! What would you do differently?: use my inhaler prior to going in - the cold water affected me - and BREATHE!!! Transition 1
Comments: had to use my inhaler, had trouble with my suit - mostly due to the added inhaler I think. What would you do differently?: use my inhaler BEFORE The swim Bike
Comments: I stayed aero but somehow could not get myself to do that push into my own 5th gear.... got blocked a LOT - where were the marshalls??? and then a car cut me off!!!! wtf! at the very end a woman blocking when we were sharing road with runners etc almost caused me to crash. I yelled left, she was in the middle of the road, someone passed me and her, I now had no where to go, yelled left again, she still did not move so I went to her right out of necessity and then she almost went into me. nice big F-CK out of my mouth. What would you do differently?: nutrition, should have used a gel Transition 2
Comments: I knocked the whole rack over - they were short crappy racks What would you do differently?: not knock the whole thing down Run
Comments: REALLY slow even for me! not sure what was up - just could not kick myself into that pain zone until the very end What would you do differently?: should have made myself use a gu or something prior to the swim Post race
Warm down: bend over and keep myself from hurling. What limited your ability to perform faster: not sure. but even though I did not feel speedy (and I was not!) I was not far from my goal time of 1:15. certainly there are plenty of areas for me to improve for next time - transitions - which would have been helped by proper inhaler use etc ahead of time, and nutrition. obviously both the swim and the run need lots of work. my run really sucks right now - guess that half marathon got me into long and slow! Event comments: They did a really great job of clearing the roads - I had biked the course last week and it was much clearer today. BUT the roads, which are narrow, were not closed except the very end and bikers and runners shared the road.... so would have been nice to have more volunteers along some of the narrow areas. Also, transition area not secure - someone had their bike computer taken. I still had fun - even if thoughts like 'why can't I just train? why do I need to race' went through my head during the run. got up had coffee, had trouble sleeping - was awake numerous times....woke the boys and we drove down. I thought I was early enough to get in before road closures but they must have closed them early. So I sent the boys on the shuttle and I biked over with transition bag. Stomach was bothering me so I did not really eat. managed to eat one dunkin munchkin, 1 shot block and a bite of a clif bar
rode to the venue, swam for a couple of minutes. Saw lots of people I know - quite group of racers - elite field 35 strong including Jarrod Shoemaker, Deide Griesbauer, Karen Smyers....
My swim coach (who has won AG nationals) won my age group.
