Pre-race routine:

S-Cap the night before, hydrated w/ Accelerade and water for the 2-3 days preceding the race. Had above average energy after race, walked Moody Gardens for 5 hours !

Slept in motel (Howard Johnson) and had a horrible night. Robin up and down, new noises, TRAIN, etc...

P&J sandwiche and accelerade
Event warmup:

stretch and relax
Swim
  • 11m 32s
  • 500 meters
  • 02m 19s / 100 meters
Comments:

Good marking on ramp, good navigation (easy to sight off of big paddle wheeler !)
What would you do differently?:

WOW ! Where do I start? Maybe never race a wetsuit race again ?

Never got comfortable, HR was too high just treading water ! Took 400 meters to get my breathing under ANY kind of control. Never felt good or even close to right. Spacing was good, never really ran into anybody or run over.

Drafted a little bit and did notice a differance. Need to do that in next race.
Transition 1
  • 02m 14s
Comments:

AG Rank - 12/59

HR avg - 168
What would you do differently?:

Overall, really good T1

Not pause in T1. practice it more so that it is automatic.

Split the ankles on the wetsuit so they are not so tight, hung up at the wet suit puller, took 2 try's. Did Body glide the arms and ankles, arms came out easy.
Bike
  • 39m 17s
  • 12.5 miles
  • 19.09 mile/hr
Comments:

Feet into shoes was not as smooth as would like. Once they are on top of shoes and pedaling started, DO NOT move feet around ! Lost a few seconds screwing around w/ trying to fliup shoes over again after rubber bands were popped.

Exit off of bike was great. Took off shoes too early, but that didn't make any real differance. Everything else was excellant!
What would you do differently?:

Secure a splash gaurd / top to the water bottle! During the race everything went real well.

Drink more at the begining and less at the end, ab cramps on run.

Before the race, work on my speed...
Transition 2
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

AG Rank - 22/59

HR avg - 172

Good T2 !

Jogged w/ bike - good, legs were stiff.

Practice the sequence of shoes, hat & race belt to make even smoother.
What would you do differently?:

Practice bricks more, legs were pretty stiff off of bike. Maybe stretch calves coming in before coming out of shoes.
Run
  • 29m 20s
  • 3.1 kms
  • 09m 28s  min/km
Comments:

Never stopped running ! 1st Tri to do that !!!

Had upper R abdominal cramps the entire run. Did I drink too much on the bike?

Stayed in my easy, long run pace most of the way it seemed even though my HR was a little higher then the normal 142.

Picked up the pace for the last 1/2 mi a little bit and paced w/ someone.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster ! Duh ! Work on sprint speed ! Find a pacer early and go w/ him.

HR and perceived effort were never close to too high. Maybe I didn't push it enough. I could have bumoped the HR up another 10 to 178 and still been okay, I think.
Post race
Warm down:

Walking around, nothing great... No massage

36 oz. Accelerade, pizza, 1 beer, orange/grapes in a cup, banana, Jin the B - Chicken Fahita Pita

Dinner at Cracker Barrel - Chicken fried Chicken, gravy mashed potatoes! Yum !!!

Slept in truck all the way home, Thanks Babe !

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Swim was slow for me.

Run is getting faster, just not as quick as I would like. Need to do more run / speed specific training.

I can go faster on the bike ! Especially that short of a distance. I will see what CB&I looks like. Do weekend rides and build up more strength, weekdays work on speed !!!

Event comments:

Really great organizational event ! If we make The Stephanie Johnson Tri, half that good it will be a "Race of the Year" type race !!

Wind: Some
Course: Great smooth beginning, 2 90's that had a little bit of gravel but it was better than our practice, they must have swept it out before the race. Speed bumps were more mental than anything, they did not slow me down. The crossroad before the seawall was horrible, need marking or sign. Seawall was great, nice and smooth w/ a exspansion joints ever 20 feet. Tailwind out, headwind (10-15mph) coming back. Not bad. Did great on the little up and down from the seawall to the beach rd. Coming back over the rough crossroad was real bad because of the higher speed, lost sponge in bottle. Need to rubber band that or something.
