Pre-race routine:

Woke at 3AM, had breakfast (2 x oatmeal, 2 bananas, 1 yogurt, 1 cereal bar, water, GE. Showered, got race nutrition together, changed into sweats, packed special needs bags, stretched, packed car and headed to transition by 4:45AM. Dropped off special needs bags and entered transition at 5AM. Got body marked, pumped up tires on put nutrition and drinks on bike. Rechecked transition bags, went to bathroom, then headed down to beach around 6AM. Sat on beach for 30 minutes with family. Changed into wetsuit and headed to starting corral around 6:30AM. Got in water for a few minutes and then took my spot on the inside edge of the buoys about 15-20 people deep.

Comments:

Started toward inside. Got a pretty clean start but ran into crowds about 250 meters out. Turn at buoys was crazy crowded and had to come to complete stop for them, especially on first lap. Felt pretty good throughout. I didn't think I slowed on the second lap as much as my splits showed, but I guess I got a little tired toward the end. Didn't navigate particularly well or draft at all really, but overall a solid swim for me.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to draft and navigate better. Get out of comfort zone a little more to push pace.
Transition 1
  • 04m 55s
Comments:

Wetsuit stipper had some problems getting my right foot out of the suit. Another volunteer actually had to come help her. That might have costs 20 seconds or so. Calf started cramping when I pointed my foot down to try to help her, but I ran that off on the way to transition.

With this being my first Ironman, I was definitely slow getting everything out of the bag and getting what I needed together to go to my bike. Not used to the bags so that was to be expected I guess.
What would you do differently?:

Be more efficient getting everything together and preparing to get on the bike. I took it a little too slow making sure I didn't forget anything. Will get better with experience.

Comments:

Road conservatively to save energy and legs for run. Was comfortable entire ride. Stopped twice for toilet and also went on the fly a couple of times.

Other than having to pee frequently, everything else went very well. Rode very comfortable pace as planned. Let everyone else hammer ahead and stayed at comfortable pace and heart rate throughout. Nutrition seemed to be spot on. Never had problems with stomach or cramping. Definitely could have pushed harder, but with this being my first Ironman distance race, I wanted to save all I could for the marathon so I stayed back.
What would you do differently?:

With experience at the distance, I would definitely push the pace a little harder. I actually stayed well below the heart rate range I had planned, but I never had any GI problems or cramping so I was happy with that and don't know how much harder I could go before that might become an issue.
Transition 2
  • 06m 13s
Comments:

Slow. After getting running shoes on, realized I forgot to apply body glide to feet so took shoes and socks off again to apply and put them back on which costs time. Also took a little too long getting everything else together. Wanted to make sure I didn't forget anything though so didn't rush.
What would you do differently?:

Just be more efficient and know exactly what I'm going to do ahead of time. I tried to mentally practice this, but didn't physically practice transitions with the bags and changing tent routine so I was slow. Obviously would not forget to apply body glide to feet before putting socks and shoes on the first time also.

Comments:

First marathon so didn't know what to expect here. Also wasn't sure if shin splints would act up or how legs would feel since I hadn't really run much for almost 2 months leading up to the race because of shin splints.

I didn't really have a time goal for the marathon due to my lack of proper training for it. My main goal was to make through without having to walk.

I lost some time with 2 bathroom breaks, 1 per loop (had to go number 2 bad each time). Also lost some time at special needs at beginning of 2nd loop so I could change my socks and shoes and get a few other items. Probably spent a total of 3-5 minutes at each stop.

I felt like run went as well as could be expected. Legs felt pretty good. Stomach felt good other than right before the two bathroom stops. Felt better immediately after those stops though. Left foot was a little sore and had a small blister on left big toe, but otherwise had no problems other than fatigue and general soreness in legs and feet.

First lap, I felt tired, but pretty good overall. No problems with legs or anything really. Just needed to concentrate on keeping pace up. Looking back on it, I realize my pace began to slow on the way out to the turnaround on 2nd loop. Pushed harder on the last 10k from the turnaround in the park to the finish line though. Really pushed hard the last 4 miles or so to get under 11:30 overall time.
What would you do differently?:

Was a little to conservative probably, but being an Ironman (and marathon) rookie, I didn't want to blow up and have to walk.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked a little bit and drank some water. Ate a little bit of turkey sandwich and then sat down and strectched for 10 minutes or so and hung out with family and friend. Then went back to condo to shower and get some real food.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Inexperience mostly. I had a really consevative race strategy for the bike and I think it payed off since I didn't have any real stomach or cramping issues all day and felt relatively good throughout. With experience, I think I could push the limits a little more, especially on the bike and run, and find out how much harder I can go before nutrition becomes a problem

Event comments:

Good effort I think for first ironman distance race. I never felt in trouble and nutrition went really well so I have to call the day a success. I sort of had a goal of 12 hours without really having any idea what I could do on the marathon, so I was very happy with the sub 11:30 time.

1st split at 73 miles was 3:45:48 (19.4 mph). 2nd split of 39 miles was 2:00:13 (19.46 mph). Averaged about 120 bpm. I had planned to stay below 130 for the bike so I was well below even that range which was meant to be conservative in the first place.
