Swim
Comments: Started on the right just behind the line of "competitors". Still, once the gun went off it was a washing machine for the first 150 yards or so. Didn't get at all nervous, just did what I had to do to keep moving forward. Once the crowding eased up, I just set the cruise control and swam. Sighting was easy due to the number of buoys. Drafted off of one guy for a while after the turnaround but his navigation sucked so I peeled off and got back on the rope. I did drift a little to the left near the end, but corrected it. What would you do differently?: Look for someone a bit speedier than me to draft off. I should pick a group who are positioned near the front and seen how long I can hang off their feet. Overall, this swim felt good. Transition 1
Comments: 23 AG 288 OA Slow. I ran to the bike from the water. Must have been during the transition itself where I lost the time. Dealing with the Garmin costs me some time. I need to get a bike mount for it. What would you do differently?: Go faster? Bike
Comments: I knew this would be slow. My AG placement is actually higher than I expected given that this was the National Championship for this distance. Had a good time. I was hoping to make it to the turn around before Mr. Whipple aka Bob passed me. Alas, it was not to be. About mile 7 I hear "Like a Rhinestone Cowboy!" and he blew past me. I yelled something that would have got me an Unsportsmanlike Conduct penalty if a ref heard. Transition 2
Comments: AG 29 OA 424 What did I do, lay down and take a nap? What would you do differently?: Got to try no socks for short races. Run
Comments: I brought the slow. And lots of it. What would you do differently?: Bring some speedy. Post race
Warm down: Ate. Talked. Got to work on not doing those at the same time... What limited your ability to perform faster: My lack of ability to perform faster. Event comments: This is a fun, fun race. The ITC and Jane Miller do such a great job. A beautiful run course, like nowhere else. Rte 89 is fun to ride on. Nice swag from USAT, a good job announcing by Tim Yount. Up at 4:30. This one was done on a pretty good sleep deficit. Insomnia the past few days kept me to 3 hrs of sleep per night.
Drove 1.5 hours on a beautiful morning to the race. Had a DD coffee and egg and cheese on a croissant. Given the lack of training and sleep I had no expectations so decided to eat what was yummy and easy.
Check-in etc was totally uneventful. I reminisced a bit about the 2004 race, my first ever tri. I was so nervous for that and now I was complete blase about this race. I knew I'd finish and just was out to have some fun on a beautiful summer's morning.
No warmup other than a few strokes in the water. I was there early but spent most of my time socializing with Bob, Jackie and other tri-friends. One of my favorite parts of a race.
