Pre-race routine:

I had my work Christmas party on Friday night and I had a mate’s going away party on Saturday night so I was pretty tired when my alarm went off at 4.45am on Sunday. I hadn't swum in almost two weeks also so I wasn't to sure how fast I was go to go but I was still keen to try and beat my last pb which stood at 1:16:35.
Event warmup:

A couple of buddies had ridden to the tri for their morning ride so I hung out with them while waiting for my wave start. It was a long wait as the starter was spacing out the waves up to 9 minutes apart. My wave finally started at 7.55am.
Swim
  • 14m 12s
  • 750 meters
  • 01m 53s / 100 meters
Comments:

I started at the back of the pack and stayed there for the rest of the swim. As I hadn't done any swim training for a while, the plan was to try and stay on course and swim it as efficiently as possible and not waste time and energy swimming off course (I know, I should be doing this every race but today i felt it was even more important).
What would you do differently?:

I survived the swim and surprisingly it was about the same time as my previous race. I was glad to be back on dry land and was looking forward to getting on my bike and trying to pass some of the guys who were in front of me.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

T1 was all good. Found my bike and grabbed my helmet and glasses and ran off out the exit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing all good.
Bike
  • 37m 33s
  • 20 kms
  • 31.96 km/hr
Comments:

I jumped on my bike and got into my shoes without any real problems and immediately started passing my fellow age groupers. I was monitoring my bike computer around the course and really concentrated on achieving an average 34kph. I got very close and I think my bike computer read 33.8kph by the time I had finished.
What would you do differently?:

I'm really happy with this ride time so I wouldn't do anything differently.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Today I was trying a new simple process in T2, one that I had seen the pros use. Basically you rack your bike, put your shoes on, take off your helmet and grab your hat and number belt in the same motion. You put your hat and number belt on while you’re running, thus reducing the amount of time you spend standing still in T2. I know it sounds simply by it worked well and I'm sure it saved me time.
What would you do differently?:

T2 went well, need to insure I always use this strategy.
Run
  • 23m 33s
  • 5 kms
  • 04m 43s  min/km
Comments:

As I started my run I checked my time and saw that I was on track to beat my pb. All I had to do was run under 25 minutes and seeing how I did it in 22.30 last time I was feeling confident.
What would you do differently?:

My legs felt a bit sore from the cycle but overall I was happy with my run time. The only disappointing part was that I lost a couple of places as a few of my age groupers passed me on the last lap.
Post race
Warm down:

After receiving a hosing down from a volunteer, I grabbed a Gatorade and headed back out to the run course to find a couple of my mates who were still on course.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The only limiting factor today was my poor swim time but I knew that was going to be the case.

Event comments:

I'm really happy with my cycle and run legs and it shows that overall I'm still on the improve, nothing beats notching up another pb.

The main goal now is to keep training over the Christmas period and be ready for the next race come January 08.
