Pre-race routine:

Stayed with Polly and Chris in a pretty neat place right on Newfound Lake with access to the lake for swimming and other recreation. Very enjoyable weekend with good friends. Up at 5:00 a.m. after a fairly decent slumber. Selected race outfit from several I had brought with me. Ended up going with tri shorts and top that I had already tested on long rides just to be safe. Put sunscreen on (not enough as you'll find out). Drank a boost. Had oatmeal with banana and vanilla yogurt. This is my standard pre-race breakfast. Managed to get that all in before the big nerves set in. Spent the rest of the time in the cottage stressing over the details and visiting the loo repeatedly. Soon realized the bike wasn't going to go on top of the car with the Zipps on. The wheels are too deep to fit in the straps. So ended up shoving it in my back seat. Finally got all the crap in the car and headed over to the race site stopping so my sherpa could get some coffee. Sipped G2 on the way over to stay hydrated. Paid close attention to hydration the 2 days leading up to the race.
Event warmup:

We had to walk about a half mile from where we parked to the race site. You could already feel the heat at 6:45 a.m. When we reached the park I got on my bike for a quick little spin to make sure it was working properly and it seemed not to be shifting the way it should. We scurried over to the bike mechanic station and had the guy take a look at it. It was getting late and I still hadn't set up transition yet so I left the bike and my husband and went to set up. I was late to the rack and my space had been eaten up by the other gals. The girl on the other side of the rack from me had taken both my space and hers laying out all her stuff. She had a big plastic bag that was spanning both sides of the rack! Umm, yah that's not gonna work. She was no where to be found so I did a little rearranging for her. Finally carved out my rightful space and got my stuff laid out. Ya know, I like to keep it real simple in transition. You really don't need so much stuff. This is something that a lot of people really need to embrace. Met Dave coming over with my bike. I am feeling not so zen with it now that its been touched by somebody, but time is running short and I need to get ready to go. Got it on the rack and set out for the last pee. Lines at all the portolets. Guy on the loudspeaker saying that if you're in the first three waves you should be making your way to the lake. Crap! I need to pee real bad. Looking for a spot in the woods. Too many people around. Finally I see a place where I can dart in far enough to have enough privacy. Ahhh, sweet relief. Ha! A guy looking at me from the bathroom building. Oh, well—WTF— I had to go. Ran back to transition. Got my wetsuit on. Grabbed cap and goggles and headed down to the lake.

Comments:

I guess I was most nervous about the swim, but I actually FEEL like I swam well in spite of my crappy time. I was able to bilateral breath for the most part although I did at times just breath to one side when things got rough. I tried to focus on drafting and just finding a good rhythm and sustainable pace. The water was definitely cold, but it wasn't intolerable. There was very good visibility unlike last year and I had my TYR prescription goggles on so was actually able to see the bouys pretty well. I tried to swim from bouy to bouy so as not to get off course but might have lost the line a little coming around the last turn as you had to kind of cut in a bit to make the line to the finish. In any case I managed to draft for a good portion and found plenty of space to swim in until I neared the finish where I got pummeled a little. I really thought my time would be better than it was, but not so. The whole time I was swimming I was thinking about the LP swim and the fact that when I hit the beach there I will get right back in and do it all over again… Maybe this is why I was so slow out there…??

Hit the beach. Ran to the wetsuit stripper who had trouble getting the last leg out the wetsuit! This ate up some time. I had a nasty headache at the base of my skull that developed during the swim. This happens to me sometimes. I was hoping it would go away soon.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Cut that line to the next bouy after the last turn a little better maybe, but I felt good and got it done.
Transition 1

Comments:

Not a bad transition. The only thing I should have done that I didn't was put more sunscreen on.
What would you do differently?:

Put more sunscreen on.

Comments:

Got on the bike with the headache, but I think it eventually disappeared. The roads were rough and I lost a water bottle out of the xlab on the road along the lake. There was lots of flotsam out there that was falling off peoples bikes—tubes and CO2s and tires and shite. Legs felt a little fatigued right off but soon worked themselves out. Made it round the first loop feeling pretty good but was developing some discomfort in my lower back on the left side and my kneepit was sore. Starting off on the second loop I passed my friend Brenda and we pretty much leap frogged each other for the entire second loop which was fun. We both hit the finish at exactly the same time. She is an awesome runner so figured I would not see her again once she got started on the run. Coming off the bike, my back and kneepit were pretty sore. I had to pee pretty bad so figured I must have had enough to drink.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I had one 3 hour bottle of PERPETUEM on the bike. Kept my aero bottle full of mixture of water and GE endurance from the course. Tried to drink often. Popped about 4 endurolytes, ate 1 shot blok and 1 PowerGel towards the end of the ride.
Transition 2

Comments:

A good transition. I hit the portolet before entering the run course so this accounts for the added time.
What would you do differently?:

Put more sunscreen on! Are you seeing a pattern here?

Comments:

This was my best split this year oddly enough. Very pleased and surprised by it given the conditions and the difficulty of the course. Last year I started the run with a nasty side stitch that I had to deal with for the duration. This year, I was feeling mcuh better except for the discomfort in my kneepit which was making it a bit painful to make a full stride. This got better though as I got into the run. Started out just trying to go easy and keep my stride short and quick and get my breathing and HR under control. Eventually caught up to Brenda and we ran together for most of the first loop doing the leap frog thing again! Saw Polly coming out as I was coming in and she was looking good!

Lost Brenda at the entrance to the second loop. Actually left her behind as she was looking for water at this point. I wore my fuel belt with Cytomax in it. At the aid stations, I took water. Drank some and poured some on my head and back. Grabbed sponges whenever I could and kept them tucked in my top. There were some hoses out on the course and I took full advantage. Took endurolytes when they were being offered. I walked the steeper parts of hills and tried to maximize the free speed on the downhills. My first 10K was about 54 minutes. Awesome! Now hold on for the second loop and a PR is in the bag. The second loop definitely got hard. The portion of road right along the lake was just brutal as there was no reprieve from the sun and it was like a frying pan. Everyone was struggling here. On the way back in on the second loop I was starting to really feel like I was running out of gas. I walked several times for just a short time and then picked it up again. I kept looking at my watch to see where I was with overall time. It was tempting to try and get the sub 6 hour, but there was a point at which I knew it was not going to happen so I let it go. However, I stayed motivated to finish with a better time than last year. The last mile and half I ran well and I think fairly fast as I knew I could more than beat my 6:13 time from last year and I still had some gas in the tank. I like to finish strong and I was totally able to do that AND with a smile on my face.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. I managed the situation well I think and pulled off a pretty sweet run. Very pleased with this given the very difficult condition.
Post race
Warm down:

Really overheated by the time I got to the finish. They had wet towels which was awesome! Got my water bottle full of cold water! and my medal and tried to gather myself. After a few minutes I was able to make it back up the shoot to see my Brenda and Polly finish.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

The heat was very definitely the limiting factor on this day!

Event comments:

I love this race. Its very well run and its a challenging course in a beautiful setting. We had a fun weekend too with a little downtime to enjoy leading up to the race.

And, of course, a shout out to my Iron Sherpa without whom any of this would not be possible.
