Pre-race routine:

Got up at 3:45 a.m. after about 5 hours of sleep. Ate bowl of Granola with soy milk. Got there early and set up early. This made a big difference, allowed us to relax and not worry about any last minute stresses.
Event warmup:

Swam 200 meters in the ocean to warm up.
Swim
  • 24m 22s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 29s / 100 yards
Comments:

Had to take a two minute wizz after I got out of the water which is factored into my swim time. Knowing what I know now, could have trimmed at leat 4-5 minutes off the swim easy. Looking forward to next year.
What would you do differently?:

I would go faster. Coming off a race the week prior where I got run over a bunch of times, I was focusing on just doing the breats stroke for a few minutes to relax and get into the groove. I kept looking at where I was going, must have done that 30 different times where I stopped swimming to look. In retrospect, the front line sighting method worked fine so I would not do that again.
Transition 1
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

This went fine.
What would you do differently?:

This went pretty smooth. The wetsuit was a little tricky so I just hit the deck and peeled it off.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 21s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.61 mile/hr
Comments:

This course was amazing. If you like speed bars you will be in heaven. I was pleased to finish in middle of pack considering over half of the competitors had high end tri bikes.
What would you do differently?:

I would do more spinning or high intensity workouts. My legs started to fill with lactic acid after about 15 miles because all of my base training was at or below LT. More interval training too.
Transition 2
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

This went great
What would you do differently?:

Put body glide on feet. I ended the race with a huge broken blisted about 1 inch long and got blood all over my shoes.
Run
  • 1h 02m 8s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

The first two miles were very strong, probably 8 to 8:30 pace. Then, not tired from a cardio standpoint but ran low on energy. Once this happens no way to recover, only way is to have enough energy in blood stream. Will error on the side of overage next time out.
What would you do differently?:

I bonked at about the 3rd mile and started mixing in walking. Back got very tight also, a banana on the bike may have helped that. Mix stronger electroyte solution and eat more on the bike. Constantly amazed how I run out of energy so quickly, need to eat a lot to prevent.
Post race
Warm down:

Wasn't hungry

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not enough electolytes and calories. Experience on how to pace. Should have done a few longer and more grueling bricks up to the race date. I peeled back a lot in March due to work obligations after 3 very solid months of prep. Also under paced in the swim, could have done much much better there.

Event comments:

Both of us were in 100% agreement, this was a magical experience. Jim Rainey is a class act along with the rest of the staff. The terrain is marvelous and I can't picture it going any better. It was truly an amazing experience.
