Swim
Comments: Not nearly as nervous about the length of the swim. Had mentally decided to do freestyle the entire length, but about 100 meters into it I began switching between them to use breastroke to site and then switch back to free for about 10 breaths. Continued this for pretty much the entire course, trying to stretch the time on freestyle. Final stretch to finish line switched to same side breathing on the right and it seemed to work well for me to push hard (for me :) ) to the swim finish. Dropped my previous 1500k race time from 51:19 to 46:54, which isn't even moderately quick, but I'm quite proud of since the first 1500k I'd swam I thought I was going to die the entire time... What would you do differently?: More time in the pool. Still need to work on my technique. Talked with some racers before our wave went in the water and one of them convinced me to get a wetsuit, so I may try that on the next long race. Transition 1
Comments: Again, spent about a month and a half in transition. Did resolve the shirt issue that I've had in the past by using a towel to quickly wipe down my back before pulling it over my head. But still...5:03??? What would you do differently?: Move faster...count the bike racks as I pass them coming in to transition Bike
Comments: Felt very comfortable on the bike this time. Don't think I killed myself for the run, but did push in the higher ranges of effort. Really got pissed off at some of the wanna-be "pros" who were coming in on the sprint distance. Especially the loser on the yellow bike that cut me off on the corners several times by coming in from two to three bikes length on the outside straight to the corner instead of keeping his line. I about T-boned him once, idiot... What would you do differently?: Spin class really helped my ability to climb on the hills. Hadn't been able to get out of the saddle on any of my previous races and it felt comfortable this time around. Need to work on my speed/cadence. Transition 2
Comments: Did it again! Since the M 30-34 group was split into A-M & N-Z ran to the wrong rack and then took about a minute to figure out what I'd done wrong. Then as I was running off, one of the awesome volunteers warned me that I wasn't running with my number...Doah!! Had to run back and pick up my number belt...another wasted 45 seconds... What would you do differently?: Count to my rack from both sides and then count off as I come in to transition. Move faster. Have things laid out a little better so I don't forget something Run
Comments: Hot! Not accustomed to the warmth and humidity. Race was close to an hour later than originally planned after the short delay and then the change from 3 minute waves to 5 minute waves. Didn't start running until around 11/11:30. There was little to no shade on the course and I was hurting. Had a cap, but decided I didn't need it coming off the bike b/c it wasn't that hot/sunny...bad idea. Force myself to "run" the first 5k and then started the dreaded run/walk survival strategy. On the start of the second lap passed someone that was acting like Chris Leigh at the end of the Ironman several years back (people were already helping him - I'm not that cold). After that I decided to take it a little easier since I really wasn't used to the heat. What would you do differently?: Looking back on my training log, it appears I was so concerned about the swim I sort of neglected my running on the previous two weeks. So I'm going to try to stay more balanced putting in 3 sessions of each sport and then maybe 4 or 5 running. Post race
Warm down: Sat under a tent with a water, ice cold beer and a frozen pop. Then walked over to transition, packed up and then drove home for 3 hours and took a shower and a nice nap :) It was a good day What limited your ability to perform faster: Training. Swimming really hit me hard again. Need to work on technique and endurance for freestyle Event comments: I keep looking back thinking that I could have gone harder, but truth be told, I probably went as hard as I could have on that given day. I did improve from my previous Olympic distance by around 6 minutes and so that's something to consider. My goal for September is to bring another 6 minutes off of my swim, break 20 mph average on the bike and run under an hour on the 10k. I think this is doable if train correctly and consistently over the next three months Last updated: 2008-01-11 12:00 AM

Woke up around 5, packed my transition bag, made a bowl of oatmeal and drank an orange juice & left for the race to try to find parking. Walked over to Transition, got my body markings & then went on to set up transition area, look for physical markers, count rows of bikes from the swim entrance and then walked over to start as they closed down transition for the Olympic distance.
None...water was too cold to get in and out and then want to get back in without a wetsuit
