Swim
Comments: Swim was relatively good. I tried to breath every other stroke rather than the normal three stroke breathe, three stroke breathe... Seemed to keep my energy up a little longer. Definitely felt weak in the shoulders, especially by the end of the race. Mixed in a little side stroke to keep moving forward at times. All in all, it is the fastest 500 I've ever swam so extremely happy about my results!! Was only passed by around a dozen or so from the wave that started after mine - or a least that I saw pass me :) What would you do differently?: More time in the pool. Need to start working on my speed. I think I've gotten to the point where I'm no longer freaking out over the swim segment, and now I need to become more focused on the results... Transition 1
Comments: The transition time starts right out of the water and you run up an asphalt parking lot and around the corner to the transition area where you pick up your bike and head out the west exit along the access road to I35. What would you do differently?: Run faster. I felt my transition time improved slightly. It is almost the exact same transition as The Rookie course back in May where I had a time of 2:43, so apparently I was just still high off my swim time :) Bike
Comments: Aero bars really need to be adjusted to fit me better. I've had several issues that I'm assuming could be traced back to bad alignment on the bike since they are just now starting to occur after having added aero bars to my bike. ANYWAY, the course was good. I didn't drop my chain like I did during the Rookie on the same course (same, but a little shorter) What would you do differently?: More time on the bike. Adjust my position on the bike. I think it has been much compromised since added the aero bars. Maybe even need to get professionally fit to the bike. My training has really slacked off lately and I could definitely feel it on the bike. I have the potential to average around 20 mph and feel I should have on this course. That's a good goal for next year's race. Transition 2
Comments: Lost count as I was running toward rack and so about cause a wreck. Whomever was behind me and had to slam on the breaks while running to their rack I am truly sorry. I would say this probably cost me around 30 seconds on the transition. Dropping helmet and switching out shoes was relatively quick (and it was nice not to have dirt all over my socks from the transition area being on asphalt). What would you do differently?: Fucking count, then recount, then count again the # of racks from both directions!!!! I've done this in every f'n race I've done. I ALWAYS lose time trying to either find my bike or finding my spot to return my bike!!! Run
Comments: HOT!!! On the first aid station I was lucky enough to get ice still in the water. Threw this under my hat and it helped until I got brain freeze...but I figured it was better to suffer through that than to overheat... Course was simple and uneventful. The return was much easier and we were actually able to run through a little shade. Talked with a runner who was roughly the same pace. Talked the way back which helped quell thoughts of walking, but if the fact that we could talk meant that we weren't running hard enough...oh well, still finished in under 30 minutes. What would you do differently?: Again, need to be more consistent in my training. Need to stop working out and start training with a purpose!!! It's too late this season - I'm in survival mode at this point, but I'm hitting it hard and scientifically this off-season Post race
Warm down: Water and Boost fruit juice!!!! Walked around to keep muscles from tightening. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of consistent training and heat Event comments: I love Jack & Adam events! They truly know how to put on an event! I couldn't say enough great things about their races. Really great atmosphere!! Last updated: 2008-01-11 12:00 AM

Woke up at B&B in Martindale at 5. Gathered things together and then made the 20 minute drive to Texas Ski Ranch. Ate my nectarine and drank my orange juice. Set up transition, applied sun screen (apparently better on one side then the other...eeeekkk) and then choked down a vanilla GU about 45 minutes before the race started.
Swam out about 150 meters and then turned around and swam back to shore just to get my shoulders working and hoping to calm my nerves a little bit since I hadn't swam since the Couples triathlon.
