Pre-race routine:

Checked in nice and early on Sunday to get a good spot in the racks. Had a bagel and a Diet Coke on the way to the race on Monday morning. Walked over to the site and got marked and set up transition.
Event warmup:

Not much of one, really. I walked back to my car to put my tire pump away and then jogged back to transistion to get my blood flowing a bit. Stretched in transition prior to race start.
Swim
  • 25m 48s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 43s / 100 meters
Comments:

Started out a bit fast but that was okay. What wasn't okay was my goggles leaking. Had to stop after less than 100m to clear them out and try to get them set again. No good. I kept trying to mash them to my face in mid-stroke. That didn't work and I started to panic a bit. I stopped, emptied them, and then yanked on the straps about as hard as I could. That solved the leaking problem, but I was breathing very hard and was a bit freaked out. I was less than 300m in. I rounded the first bouy and settled a bit, then rounded the second for the long backstretch. I was able to get into a better rhythm and relaxed. Exited the water feeling winded, but good.
What would you do differently?:

Not use the Aquasphere goggles. They don't seem to fit me face very well.
Transition 1
  • 03m 29s
Comments:

T1 was okay. No problems with the wetsuit, though I need to work on putting my helmet on as I step on the suit to get it off.
What would you do differently?:

Not much, I just need to get more efficient.
Bike
  • 1h 12m 12s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 20.65 mile/hr
Comments:

Good ride. Had a gel pack immediately on the bike along with some water and repeated that on each lap. It worked out well for nutrition and helped me keep track of my laps. I was able to maintain a pretty constant draft because the course was so crowded. I'd come up on someone, tuck behind them until the last second, and then come around.
What would you do differently?:

Corner more aggressively. I probably could have taken them faster than I did.
Transition 2
  • 01m 49s
Comments:

T2 was a bit messy because of the rain. I decided to go ahead and run through it in my socks anyway. They didn't get very wet, just damp. They did get dirty, but not enough to have a negative effect. Don't remember much else about it.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing I can think of.
Run
  • 48m 7s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 45s  min/mile
Comments:

Felt a bit rough heading out. It was getting hot out there. Settled in after the first 2 miles and then just relaxed and tried to cruise as fast as I could. I was surprised at my pace. It wasn't that far off my 10k pace from April.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around finish area, stretched, had water, some crackers, and a beer.-

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Just training. I was MOP on all the disciplines. Age group rankings were 54, 61, 61 out of 137. I need better power/less weight on the bike to deal with the hills more effectively. For the run, I might try to incorporate a bit more speed work.

Event comments:

Great race for me overall. My goal was 3:00:00. I thought I could reasonably expect 2:45:00 based on my training times. My actual time of 2:31:27 was a great thrill. If I do this race next year, I'll shoot for 2:25 or less. Just slight improvements in each area should get me there.
