Swim
Comments: 1082 out of 1438, I cut 5 min 39 sec off of my best time since last yrs Olympic. I felt pretty good about the swim, still not as fast as I wanted but I didn't have the nervousness or stoppage time of floating on my back to catch my breath. Need to learn how to swim faster as well as build endurance. 1 Mile is a long freakin way! What would you do differently?: Swim longer distances and incorporate more sighting techniques in the open water. Transition 1
Comments: Extremely long transistion run but once I arrived at the bike the suit came off easily. Grabbed the bike and headed out to tackle the 100 yd run to the start. Couldn't get on the bike after the transition marker, tried twice prior to capitulating and just coming to a complete stop to mount the bike. How I was there almost 4 min is ridiculous but not sure how much time was wasted running from the lake to the bike then to the bike start. Had to run through the sandy T1 in my shoes vs. leaving them attached to the pedals, didn't want to step on any stickers during the run. What would you do differently?: My hamstring cramped as they yanked me out of the water, lost my balance and all my weight was on the leg that cramped. May try a light jog prior to the swim to get the legs warm or kick harder priot to exiting the water. Felt dizzy after the run to T1 due to the distance but overall T1 seemed ok until I saw the time. Should have been 3 or less. Bike
Comments: Tried the aero bars right out of the gate and almost flipped the bike. Got a loud yell "left" from a competitor I almost took out...later to realized that it was the girl that the H-Town boys were in love with...tried to keep up with the hotty but she was too strong and sped away. Fun, enjoyable ride. Got better on the turns actually holding 20 MPH around the turn on the backside of the Capital. A little crowded but the turns held back a higher average. Actually hit 29 MPH on one downhill and hit 24 on a straightaway. Getting better :) What would you do differently?: Buy more speed by upgrading the bike? Work on gear shifting on the hills and pushing the higher gear quicker on the straightaways. Transition 2
Comments: Left the shoes on and jogged/walked the bike to the rack. A little more traffic than usual in t2 but wanted to get my wits about me. Sat down to put on the socks and shoes. Could have skipped the socks but thought safe was better than dealing with blisters. Sucked down the last of me Cytomax Heat concoction prior to embarking on my long Sunday afternoon walk. What would you do differently?: Run without socks and buy new shoes that are porous. Shoes were pretty heavy due to the soaking I took during the water breaks. Run
Comments: Arrggh talk about HOT! Did my best to stay hydrated on the bike and take GUs but seemed to fall short 3 min into the run. Twenty degrees difference from the Olympic distance last Oct. Felt it real hard on the run. Thanks to the Team in Training girl who advised me of the distance remaining and antagonizing/daring me to run with her the last mile. Helped my time immensely. Love the bond of athletes pulling eachother through the bitter mind numbing tribulations of a tough race. What would you do differently?: More gatorade less water during the run. Run more in the heat. Incorporate salt tablets or something to that effect. Need to feel like my stomach is empty in order to run better. Sucking down 7 gallons of water during the run isn't conducive to running at a 9:30 pace. Post race
Warm down: Inhaled two bottles of water and seeked out the other T3 teammates. What limited your ability to perform faster: Training in the heat. Event comments: Comparing the US Open to CapTex: Cut 5 1/2 min off of my swim time. Cut 4 1/2 min off of my bike time. Gained 7 1/2 min on my run. Gained 2:48 in transitions due to extended lentgth and incorporating the wetsuit and wearing socks. I couldn't get anymore wet if I would have jumped back in the river going through the transitions but overall hydration was good..the stomach felt full which hampered the run due to the water intake but my mind was telling me to take it in. Very mental race and I succumbed to what my mind was telling me and walked...too much. I wonder how much was left in the tank if I were to run the whole thing...could I have made it under 60 min? Could I have run the whole thing? Pretty happy with the first 2/3rds of the race. The run was a beast due to the heat. The hills weren't that bad; pretty happy with my training on the bike. Saw Birdie, Big Techs, and JJ on the run but couldn't catch any of them. Tough race overall definitely tougher than the half mary in Feb. Last updated: 2008-01-15 12:00 AM

Breakfast wasn't served at the Embassy so had to resort to the Murphy suite for a bagel and gatorade. Walked down at 5:45 to set up transition.
Forgot a towel but set everything up and grabbed the wetsuit, cap, and goggles and headed to the waiting area with Buehler. Used my neighbors towel in T1 since he beat me out of the water. I'm sure he would've offered if I we were there at the same time.
Sat around for an extra hour as the starts were delayed. Stretched 30 min prior. Watched the pros take off and hit T1 after the swim. Drank three cups of water as we watched the sun rise and announce it's presence to all those racers who now would be competing against the heat much later in the day due to the delayed start.
