Run
Comments: Took off with the masses down the hill, after the first 3/4 of a mile I looked at the Garmin and I was well under an 8:00 pace. Decided to whoa it up a bit, Dexter was still with me at this point. The group was starting to thin out and we were headed to another hill. Just before the first mile I heard my Garmin beep, I figured it was the mile split, but it said it had stopped. Could not get it going again, then it reset but wouldn't start. So I just kept running. The HR was reading so I figured I could run off that. Just about the second mile I hit start and it worked again. Tried to maintain a consistent pace on the flats, not let it drop much on the uphills and take advantage of the down hills. Tough thing about the out and back courses is seeing the leader, running along at about a 5 min pace looking like he is on a recovery run. But it also gives you a chance to see some friendly faces and encourage each other along. On the way back I tried to just pick a target (person) 25 - 30 feet ahead and try and pick em off one at a time. Didn't count how many I passed, but I only got passed once on the way back. This was a guy that pulled up with what looked like a cramp and was walking when I passed him, he got me back after a bit. This race series has not had a lot of on course support. I know this and have been bringing some Gatorade Endurance with me on the course, but forgot today. Started paying for this at about 4 miles. My right calf started cramping some. Fortunately not a debilitating cramp, just enough to make the last up hill a bit of a challenge. Topped the last hill and tried to push it in to the finish. I really had no goals for this race as far as a time or even a PR. I have been using these as a great way to get off the treadmill and a chance to run with some friends. But in the back of my mind I was thinking a sub 50 minute run would be great. But today it was not meant to be. But, my previous PR was 53:30 so I did PR by almost a minute and a half, so my run conditioning has improved quite a bit in the last year. Especially considering the course for my previous PR was a lot flatter! What would you do differently?: Remember to bring my water bottle with some Gatorade. Post race
Warm down: Walked back down the hill a bit to cheer in Ridgelake and Dexter. Ridgelake must have passed me when I was getting the chip off and pushing through the others at the finish line as I missed him finishing. I did see Dexter getting "coached" in by Marmadaddy. I wonder why Dexter kept Marma on his right side? :) We then changed and enjoyed the post race pizza party. What limited your ability to perform faster: I could still stand to lose a bit of weight to get faster. Other wise time and miles training is the key! Event comments: This series is put on by runners for runners. They do a great job for the most part. I did 4 out of the 6 races. I should have done them all. Last updated: 2008-01-28 12:00 AM

One of the nice thing about this series of races is they don't start until 10. But do you think I could sleep in a bit? Anyways, had breakfast, changed and went to my dad's to switch my truck for his van. Picked up Dexter and headed to the park and ride to pick up Marmadaddy and Ridgelake. (Ridgelake was a bit green from an unsuccessful attempt at liquid carb loading Friday night).
We headed to the race site, got registered and got ready to run. This was one of those days that makes it tough to figure out the right things to wear. A bit cold, but no wind and the sun was bright. I should have gone with lighter top layer, but otherwise not to bad.
I ran down the hill a bit and back up to the race start.
