Pre-race routine:

Stayed at the Holiday Inn Select in downtown Lynchburg, not to be confused with the Holiday Inn EXPRESS that is on the other side of Lynchburg. Chalk that up to not looking at my info. :)

Had picked up my reg. materials the night before, so I got up around 6am, ate a banana, grabbed a cliff bar, packed my gear (I had set it out the night before), and headed for the transition area.

Along the way I met up with Will, and we walked over.
Event warmup:

Swam a few laps in the smaller (and warmer) YMCA pool, stretched, and generally counted time until I had to line up. Snake swims are cool and all, but I seriously think people botched their seedings. The first person in the water was 7:15 for the 300y, which, mind you, isn't "first person in the water" times.
Swim
  • 06m 6s
  • 328 yards
  • 01m 52s / 100 yards
Comments:

0:0:15 second start times for everyone, so you had a person to try to swim down -- I caught about three people, and I don't think I was passed.

It was rough, and I am not exactly sure why. I think the warm water played tricks on me.
What would you do differently?:

I still need a lot of time in the pool. I can do the distance no problem, and I feel strong, I just don't have the speed yet. Nothing that training can't fix.
Transition 1
  • 01m 37s
Comments:

63rd fastest T1 (Men)

Transition was pretty smooth. I had pre-locked my shoes, so they were open and ready. It was still chilly, so I put on my C9 long sleeve, and decided to go sans socks.

I think that one cost me. My feet were frozen through the ride, but didn't bother me until the run. In the future, probably better on a day like today to take the extra 15 seconds to put on socks. I even had them pre-rolled, but oh well.

Quickly hydrated, de-racked, ran through transition and mounted on the run. Putting on shoes was not terribly bad, better than the last time I tried it, but still not seamless.

Comments:

The ride was fun. Hard, but fun.

I am not a great hill climber (yet) so the beginning of the course pretty much tore me apart. Now, I was still able to pass people, and keep from being passed, but I can't say it was my best day.

Once on the return though, I got my stride and started to nail my shifting a lot better -- until I hit River Road going back up, at which point, I fell apart. Nothing horrible mind you, but mentally the last two hills broke me.

Coming through downtown as quick, and then back into the transition area.
What would you do differently?:

Train more hills. Expect more hills. Love more hills. Oh, and figure out gearing better (which will just happen -- as I do more hills!)
Transition 2
  • 02m 42s
Comments:

Hrumph, it was slow. Shoes wouldn't go on, and apparently I took a nap. Not impressed with my time, but alas, that's life :)
What would you do differently?:

It's a blur, so I am sure I lollygagged around a bunch. Just keep workin' it next time.
Run
  • 27m 34s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

The transition worms weren't very apparent. My legs felt pretty good during the start of the run. However, my feet didn't.

I was still fighting "frozen" toes from the bike, and it took me quite a while before they returned to full feeling. I don't think it was actually a problem, but that late in the race, I was looking for issues.

Additionally, I needed more cardio work during training, because I just lost energy about 1/2 way through the run. I recovered a bit on the way back, but heading to the turn-around felt a lot longer than 1.5 miles.

The hill on the way back, I walked up. I wasn't proud of it, but I think that I would have only been slightly faster running, and then I wouldn't have had anything for the finish -- in theory.

In actuality, I think I had plenty of energy, and just didn't manage well. I should have hit the hill moderately hard, and known that crowd noise would have gotten me down the last 300m of the straight away.
What would you do differently?:

I need a better run base. The 5k alone would have been very feasible, and in fact, I think I could have run it under in 24 minutes (probably well under). But after the other two disciplines, nope.

More hills in my training runs. No substitute for just doing it.

Wearing socks on the bike may have saved the mile of "warm-up" that it took for me to work out the kinks in my feet. That really threw off my gait.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a bunch, grabbed my bike and gear, and went back to the hotel to check out (it was almost 11:00 when I finished). That was a good 15 block walk, so I got to work out some of the muscle kinks.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Training base, pure and simple. I need more time on the bike, and my new CompuTrainer should accomplish that. For the run and the swim, I am going to modify my workouts so I get out four days a week for both (with four on the bike)

Event comments:

Very enjoyable race. The guys from Angels Foundation and Setup Events put on a wonderful race. I plan on being here next year, unless it happens to fall on the same weekend as CA70.3

And next year, I plan to come with a better base :)

Course: Out and back along the James River, total elevation change was 824 ft (with it being revered on the way back, 412 ft. of total climb over 7.75 miles) First section is urban, and takes you through downtown Lynchburg. Few turns before hitting the bridge (off a long downhill) and then another larger downhill onto River Road. River Road segment is hilly, with hills that definitely grab at your ankles. A good deal of the way out is uphill, so you get a nice downhill ride about 60% of the return trip. The climb up River Road (on the return) is a 10% grade, followed by a 12% climb up to downtown. Brutal.
