Swim
Comments: Leaky googles. I stopped once at the beginning to fix them and that didn't help so I just swam. I basically swam with my eyes shut only opening them to sight the buoys. That part sucked pretty bad. Also, possible because the goggles were distracting me, but I had a really hard time getting into a comfortable rhythem. My strokes were sloppy, breathing was off. I was breathing every other stroke instead of every 3 like usual. About 300 into it I started feeling a little better, but was definitely glad when the swim was over. What would you do differently?: Well, it goes back to never try anything new the day of the race....The goggles were new. Enough said. Transition 1
Comments: It was a little colder so I had to deal with putting on a jacket. My fingers were a little numb and I struggled with the zipper on it. I also put on socks to keep my toes warm adding some time. I didn't think to put the toe warmers back on my shoes!! Oh and I forgot to grab my gel, and I forgot to install my aero bottle. What would you do differently?: Use toe warmers and have shoes on the pedals. Bike
Comments: I'm not sure why I didn't feel strong on the bike. May have been b/c of the winds, but I really just wanted off whereas normally this is my strenth. I was trying to save my legs for the run (and was sucessful at that) but I think I could have ridden stronger. Transition 2
Comments: not bad. Nothing spectacular about this transition. Had a little extra time taking off the jacket. Run
Comments: This was a great run for me although my feet were number the first 2/3 of the course. I felt strong and NO ONE from my age group passed me. This is a first. It was also a PR run. There were no mile markers on the course which would have been nice for adjusting pace. Since I forgot a gel on the bike, I carried it with me on the run and sipped it along the whole course. I only had a little water which wasn't great; but I can't complain since as a whole the run was great. What would you do differently?: drink more water? Post race
Warm down: none. What limited your ability to perform faster: not sure. maybe not knowing exactly where I was on the course. Event comments: There were several events all going on today. The organization was lacking and the number of volunteers was low. It wasn't horrible, but there was room for improvement. It seemed to be lacking excitement. The lighting in the pre-dawn hours was horrible. Bringing a clip on light for my visor next time might be a good idea! Last updated: 2008-02-12 12:00 AM
