Swim
Comments: There were waves at least 4' tall at times. Getting out was very tough and it took a lot out of me just to get to the first 50 yard bouy. I was very tired by the time I turned and actually started swimming, so I had to take it easy for a while. It was hard to develop a rythm because the waves were so active that timing a breath was hard. What would you do differently?: I need to get more practice for ocean swimming if I am going to be doing tri's in the ocean. Lakes around here are not the same game. Total disadvantage right from the start. Transition 1
Comments: T1 went smoothly. No issues at all. I was very pleased. The transition area was gravel, so I picked a spot that would require me to run the least barefoot. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Bike
Comments: Started out well on the bike. Rode very strong at the beginning and was in line for a good time. Right around the half way point I got a severe cramp in my back. I couldn't ride in aero for the rest of the time. The only way to relieve the cramping was to arch my back. I just bore down and did whatI could. Really affected my ride, though. Biking is my strength. What would you do differently?: Force some more fluids. Not sure what caused the cramping. Transition 2
Comments: No problems in transition. Since the transition was gravel I chose to not do a flying dismount which I had practiced. It would have required me to run a long way barefoot in the gravel. Chose to get off a little slower and have the shoes on my feet. Ate a gel and drank some water, socks and shoes on, then I was out. It went well. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: Cramps were magnified in the run. The bouncing of the run just made them ache. I had to walk a lot more than I had wanted to. I finally started running with my back arched and it took the cramps to a bearable level, but it slowed me down a lot more than I wanted to. What would you do differently?: Again with the cramps. I am not sure what caused them, but they are still kind of there when I stand up 12 hours after. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank a couple of bottles of water. What limited your ability to perform faster: Overall fitness and experience. Event comments: This is a good event. The folks are great and they have a good time putting on the race. Last updated: 2008-02-15 12:00 AM

Got up early and watched the water roll in - hoping the waves would settle down. They didn't. Went through my checklist, got everything set up and drank a water bottle full of water. Got marked up and talked to some other first timers that had their bikes parked by mine. They were cool and we had some fun, then I walked out to the water.
Walked into the water and got the crap kicked out of me by the waves to get used to the water. Got some last minute advice from Ken (Manatee Express).
