Swim
Comments: Well after waiting over an hour to start finally got in the water and it was pretty cold at first but afetr waiting around it felt pretty good. The gun went off and we were finally off. The first half of the swimm went pretty well sighting was very easy and I just picked a line sighting off the orange buoys. Whne I hit the turn around I started to run into some of the waves that wnet before us. When I made the turn to come home it was constant dodging of people and I had a hard time spotting the next buoy, somehow I stayed on course. As i got to the final turn buoy my left calf started to cramp. I kicked and finally got it stop, and made my way to the finish. What would you do differently?: Not a bad swim however they had me starting in the first wave and my swim time iniatally was 5:00 slower than it actually was. Had to talk with the timing folks to get it corrected. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was okay there were a lot of people in this race and transition was no different. This transition was a long run form the water to the racks and the another long run out of transition to the mount line. All along the way it was crowded. What would you do differently?: Not much, overall I was happy with T1 Bike
Comments: Starting out on the bike was a challenge the course was already packed and my goal was to get faster with each lap. I took the first lap to get the lay of the land, and know where all the turns are. This is a pretty technical course made more difficult by the sheer number of people racing. The first lap went well but the number of folks that were racing three and four wide was astronomical. The course was nice and wide with romm to pass but there were a lot of folks that just stayed to the left. The ride was pretty uneventful I woud rid ethe first half with the turns around the capitol fairly conservatively and then when I made the right hand turn onto Ceaser Chavez drop the hammer. On my last lap as I was making the sweeping turn aroundf on Ceaser Chavez a narrowly avoided getting taken out by a dude that suddenly veered left and almost hit me. I slammed on the brakes and moved right just missing him. That got my adrenaline going so I hammered the last part into T2. What would you do differently?: Not much, I rode a little more conservatively that I should have but with the course as crwded as it was you had to ride somewhat defensively and really pay attention to what the other riders were doing. Transition 2
Comments: T2 was more of the same as I came to the dismount line there were three people right nect to each other so I had to slow and actually ended up dismounting about 20 ft before the line. The rest was trying to dodge folks to get to my corral. What would you do differently?: I ran by alittle ways and had to turn around and go back. So better sighting of where my rack was located. Run
Comments: Well by the time I hit the run it was baking out there on the course. My goal was to try and get faster in the latter half of the run. I tried to go out conservatively and felt pretty good on the first loop. I decided that I would by pass the aid stations becasue I just wanted to run. The run course was just like the bike course, crowded. The run course was pretty much all in the open except for one nice shaded part coming back dwon congress. As I started my second lap I felt the heat starting to take its toll. By the time I hit the congress bridge the second time I could feel myslef statring to really slow. Now it was time to just keep going. Hit the finsh line and just wandered around for ten minutes. What would you do differently?: Well I did not do a ton of speed work leading up to this race. That is something I think could be improved, as well as running more in the heat to get the body prepared for a run in the sun. Post race
Warm down: Walked around and drank a bunch of gatorade and water. Found some shade and put some ice down my tri top to cool off. Talked with Todde for a while and then wnet to find Michelle. When they finally posted my time I noticed my swim time was off so I went over and talekd to the timers, and they got it fixed for me. Waited around and went to the awards ceremony. What limited your ability to perform faster: The biggest factor was the crowded course, but there is not a lot that can be done about that. The heat was also pretty brutal so I need to get some more hot weather training in. Event comments: Racing is good regardless, and I had a great time. The bike course specifically, in my opinion needs to be revamped to accomadate the number of people that race. Making the bike course a little longer may help to spread people out (something like Austin Tri) less laps????? Overall though with the sheer number of people and the three different events this was a well run event. Last updated: 2008-02-25 12:00 AM

Woke up at 0300 and did not sleep very well. Ate some oatmeal, and a bagel with peanut butter. Drank cofee and made some nuun for the ride down to Austin. Did not leave the house until 0445.
Got to Austin at around 0545 and by the time we found parking and I changed it was 0600. Went to transition and pumped the tires and got setup, by this time they were asking people to get out becasue transition was about to close. Really did not get to warm up except for running to find Michelle and give her the bike pump to put away. In all the rush I forgot to put on sunscreen, at that time it looked like we were going to have an overcast morning. Made my way to the swim start and then just waited. Found Todde and chatted with him for a while and then watched the elites coming into T1.
