Pre-race routine:

Woke at 4am, and ate bowl of porridge oats (blueberries and Agave nectar), tea, and sports drink. At race by 5:30am, racked bike and setup transition. Used porta-john once, and bushes during short run warm-up. Put on wet-suit and had gel.
Event warmup:

5 mins run, and 5 mins in water ot to first buoy (about 100yards).
Swim
  • 19m 43s
  • 984 yards
  • 02m / 100 yards
Comments:

First triathlon so nothing to base open-water swim against. Not as scary as I had built up in my head, and wetsuit made a huge difference with the buoyancy. Goggle leaked on my right eye pretty much from the off, and I forgot to start my watch on the gun. Found sighting was a chore, and had to make numerous corrections to get back on course. Rounded first buoy way too wide, so ended up swimming further than most.
What would you do differently?:

Start watch, make sure goggles are properly fitted, and practice sighting drills more.
Transition 1
  • 02m 6s
Comments:

Pleased with T1. Body glide on ankles helped with the wetsuit removal process, plus standing on the legs once down far enough.
I chose to wear socks for the bike and run, so had to dry feet and put these on.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Bike
  • 41m 43s

  • 21.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I'm gobsmacked with my bike time! Borrowed bike from friend, and have only been riding on it for a couple of weeks. I think this is becoming my strongest leg. Course was familiar as had trained on it a few times. Felt good on the hills as I seemed to pass more than I was passed. Only bummer was that my bike computer was not picking up signal from wheel.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure bike computer is working fully. Otherwise nothing else.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

Pleased with T2. Nothing went wrong. Elastic laces help hugely.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 35m 48s
  • 5 miles
  • 07m 10s  min/mile
Comments:

Happy with run, but still getting used to the dragging leg feeling. Also I broke the cardinal rule and was wearing new socks which caused a blister on sole of right foot. Not sure if my run would have been any quicker, but would have been more comfortable.
What would you do differently?:

Not wear new socks.
Post race
Warm down:

Nothing. Gentle walking around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blister on foot.

Event comments:

Good first time triathlon. Swim perfect length for me, and local enough to be able to train on the course.
