Pre-race routine:

Not much of a routine. Just overwhelmed with everything. Got there early to get a good spot for transition. Hung out with Schmize and tried to make sure I had everything figured out.
Event warmup:

Didn't do much of a warmup. Run was just to the bathroom!
Swim
  • 11m 54s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 21s / 100 yards
Comments:

First open water swim. Felt terrible! Hyperventilated and swore that was it. I was never going to do this again. Could not get a good rhythm down. Finally towards the end it was a little better, but not great.
What would you do differently?:

Start slower. Relax.
Transition 1
  • 02m 24s
Comments:

Didn't have clipless pedals so I rode in my runnning shoes. Socks and shoes went on quickly and I was satisfied with my T1.
Bike
  • 39m 35s
  • 12 miles
  • 18.19 mile/hr
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

Forgot to take my helmet off! Spectator reminded me and I threw it to the side and my wife got it. Other than that it was a fast T2 (3rd fastest overall), but I already had my running shoes on.
Run
  • 26m 35s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 33s  min/mile
Comments:

Tough run. I did okay, but really felt it. However, I expected that. My butt was dragging on the last lap.
What would you do differently?:

Keep training!!! Also, I did not monitor HR at all, which is critical.

Event comments:

The event was poorly managed. The race started late because they were not set up on time. Weather was threatening at first and we missed a good window to start. Not to mention the body cooled down waiting. The bike course was marked okay for sprint, but many oly riders made wrong turns and put on additional mileage. The run was awful with people running all different ways on the loop. However, it was my first tri and I actually placed in my age group. That really pumped me up, even though I only got a hat, and got me super excited about this whole triathlon thing.

Course: Actual course was about 13.1 miles. Small rollers, but a really nice ride around the lake. Even though I was riding my old Peugot, I still kept a pretty good pace for my first tri.

Course: Hilly run and it started to get hot! Very poorly managed run. People did not know what way to go and some people ran the correct way, others did not. They finally had someone there directing on my third lap around the course.
