Pre-race routine:

The Kansas road trip started Thursday afternoon when Amy (AmyJoTris), Josh (MuTri) and myself loaded the mini van and headed out.
Turned on the GPS and nothing. No satilites. The map worked, but nothing ealse. We gussed it would ne a 10 hour drive, but it turned out to be longer than anticipated. 30 minutes into the drive we drove into massive black clouds that turned into a severe storm that forces cars to pull over. Once we were able to see the trip continued.
Once we hit interstate 80 in Iowa we realized how bad the flooding had devistated the area. Miles upon miles of flooded fields and towns. It really puts things into perspective when you see what thousands of people lost.
After a few wrong turns (and an extra $1.80 in tolls) we pulled into the Holiday inn in Lawrence Kansas at Midnight.

Rang the bell and Bill came to the desk. Bill was an older gentleman that had some health problems and sounded like he was about to keal over. After asking for my name a few times, he said he could not find our reservations.. WTF??? I made them the day before on the web. After a few more minutes he found the reservation- for the following week- oops. Good thing they still had an available room.
Next AM drove to the campground. The campgground reservations were made 5 months ago, so I had no idea what the site number was. The welcome booth was colsed, so we drove around until we found the site marker with our name. Finally we were done driving! Set up camp and hit the beach. Since the bouys were out we decided to swim to the first one. Nice swim, great water temp and nice beach. Then we headed to the expo. THe expo was in town- about 25 minutes away.

The drive to the expo took us on the first part of the bike course. Wow- the hills were huge. Not super steep, but miles long.

Josh and I registered and started picking on Amy. We told her that registration was still open, and SHE REGISTERED! Way to go Amy. Now it was the three of us, and the pressure was on!

Back to camp and went over the bike to make sure everything was OK.
Swim
  • 47m 47s
  • 2100 yards
  • 02m 17s / 100 yards
Comments:

The course was long based upon the pros times. Tough swim and I was bumped much more than at Moo. Caught a few swimmers from the earlier groups, and got caught from some of the faster ones from the following group. Sighted well on the way out, not so good on the second section and OK on the way back.
Transition 1
  • 03m 18s
Comments:

Had a great T spot. Off with the suit, on with the bike gear- quick pee stop and I was off.
Bike
  • 3h 18m

  • 16.97 mile/hr
Comments:

Hill and wind. Had a great ride overall. Had 2 bottles of Perp on the bike. Finished 1.5 by the first aid station, stopped to pee and picked up a Gateraid. Finished second bottle of Perp and G-aid by the second aid station. Stopped to pee and picked up G-aid and H2o. Hit the third aid station, pee'd and took water.
Course had multiple long (over 2 mile long) hills. Not super steep and was able stay in the saddle and spin the hills. Also very windy which took it's toll as the ride continued.
Overall great bike course. Roads were smooth and fast.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Nailed both nutrition and pacing on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 53s
Comments:

Into T2, changed socks and shoes and ran out.
Run
  • 2h 09m
  • 13.1 miles
  • 09m 51s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was through the campground. Our site was at mile 1, and the weather started to look crappy. Yelled at the folks camping across from us to please put the stuff we left out into our tent. No problem :)
turns out that group was a Pro group from Texas that we partied with after the race. They were the southern version of the donkeys!

The legs felt great and I was able to run about 10-11 minute miles and felt great. Say Amy at mile 3 and realized I had about 5 minutes on her but she was gaining. This meant no walk breaks. Just kept going.
Sky turned dark with thunder and the temp dropped 20 degrees, but no rain.
Hit Transition and started the second loop feeling great and still actually running! Hit the last loop and was pulled from the course with 2 miles to go. WTF- they closed the course???

Turned into the chute, got my medal and waited for Amy to finish. It was raining pretty good so we took our bikes and walked back to the campsite.

Post race
Warm down:

Back and camp talked to the folks across from us. Turns out they were pros from Texas. Pulled our chairs over and started drinking their beers. Great group. Laughed for hours. Someone from the race directors group drove by and was picking up the mile markers on the course. The Texas group stopped the truck and we set up our finishers chute for those that got pulled from the course. Great fun was had by all!

Took Amys 70.3 sticker and changed it to a 69.3 sticker
They also had left over G-aid and gels so we loaded up the van. 500 gels and multile cases of G-aid.
I 80 was closed, so the return trip took a lot longer.

Event comments:

Overall a great race. Super venue, great camping and super people. We're already talking about doing this next year with a larger group.

Special congratulation to Amy- great job on her first HIM on a tough course.

Pictures are up here.
