Swim
Comments: I nearly gave up and went back to shore. Why? I completely panicked when I was surrounded by kicking and flailing arms and legs. It was a deep water start, which didn't bother me. Until of course I had to try to swim. I couldn't. So immediately I began to panic. I had to switch between every stroke I knew other than front crawl to try to calm myself down. I didn't calm down enough to do that until the second buoy. When I got there, I started swimming and swam way off course inside the buoys. I guess I can't swim straight at all. I did finally get out after veering off course a second time and almost missing the exit. I wasn't tired much at all, so I can physically do the swim. I just need to be able to mentally handle it as well. What would you do differently?: I need to work out a way to not be freaked out by people swimming around me. If I can do that, I can have a good swim. Transition 1
Comments: Seemed to go okay. Got my socks on and got out the chute. I need to practice with my shoes on the bike and jumping on. This probably would not have been a good course to try this on because the first thing you have to do when exiting is to climb a hill. What would you do differently?: Have shoes on bike and skip the socks possibly. Oh, and run out of the chute and jump on the bike. Bike
Comments: Since the race results aren't posted yet, I have no idea how the bike went. I rode a rental bike which was a little too big for me. It worked okay though. The downhills were crazy fast. I come from a land of small hills, so going 35+ on a bike makes me nervous. I felt good on the ride though. At the 10 mile marker, my seat came loose and slid forward. When I was adjusting it the day before, I guess I didn't tighten in properly. I didn't bother to stop and fix it since I was so close to the finish. What would you do differently?: Have my own bike, drink more water. Transition 2
Comments: Pretty smooth, got the hat and shoes on and was off. What would you do differently?: Really need to work on getting the bike shoes off while on the bike. Run
Comments: There were no flat places. About the only thing you can do is make up for time on the downhill when you can. I felt pretty good, so I think I could have raced a little harder. I just wasn't sure how I would handle that last hill. What would you do differently?: Run harder. It's the end of the race, right? Post race
Warm down: I went to the finish line to wait for my friend. Lingering around and then lunch. Food is soooo good after a race. We then went to shower and spent 4 hours in a car. Not a good idea that, but it had to be done. I think we were all a little stiff and sleepy in the car. What limited your ability to perform faster: My brain! It just got in the way of that swim. And, I just need to get more experience in races and with my limits. I need to know where they are, so I can work harder during the races. Event comments: Not having the results up within 24 hours of the race completely sucks. I am far-sighted, so I couldn't read the tiny posted results at the race. Now I'm just hoping they get the results up soon so I can know my times. Last updated: 2008-03-17 12:00 AM
