Pre-race routine:

Woke up about 6:00am and had a bowl of low sugar oatmeal for breakfast. Drove about 45 mins. to Smithfield. Unloaded, sat up transition area. Hung out watching the first 20 racers go through T1. Had a 200 calorie snack about 2.5 hours before my start time. Hung out in gym, worked crossword puzzled, got dressed. Realized that I was missing my swim goggles. Spent several minutes searching then realized I must have left them in the transition area.
Event warmup:

Light stretching and walking around the Y.
Swim
  • 07m 20s
  • 300 meters
  • 02m 26s / 100 meters
Comments:

Very weak in the swim. Need to practice and get some coaching.
What would you do differently?:

Remember my goggles
Transition 1
  • 03m 26s
Comments:

First triathlon so this was my first real transition. Mentally went over things the night before but it took much longer than I thought it would. The extra clothing for the cooler temperature extended time I think.
What would you do differently?:

Try to pick up the pace.
Bike
  • 31m 4s
  • 10 miles
  • 19.31 mile/hr
Comments:

I was really hoping for a sub 30 min. time on the bike ride. I think the NE wind which was almost directly across the entire course slowed me down more than I had expected it to.
What would you do differently?:

Just need more time on the bike.
Transition 2
  • 02m 15s
Comments:

Again it took longer than I thought it would. I don't know how much shedding the extra clothing slowed me down.
What would you do differently?:

Pick up the pace.
Run
  • 23m 46s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 38s  min/mile
Comments:

I was hoping for something close to 7.5 min./mile. There were two youngsters manning the water station at the turn around. Some of the cups blew away from them in the gusts and while one was trying to retriew them, I ran into him. I yelled I was sorry, he said he was ok so I kept going.
What would you do differently?:

I think I could probably have run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around a lot while other racers were finishing.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Wind and temperature and need for more training

Event comments:

I did about what I had expected on the swim, the bike, and the run. The transitions took much longer than I thought they would. The race was well organized and staffed adequately. They did, however, run out of the advertised "all you can eat barbeque" so I didn't get any.
