Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:10AM, ate cereal and yogurt (not sure I will eat yogurt again) pack up stuff and headed to the park and set up transition area.
Event warmup:

Walked around a lot, didn't swim or bike or run. Ate half a banana with peanut butter about 7:15 (8:30am start) Was pretty full and the yogurt wasn't sitting well so couldn't finish the banana. Drank some water and gatorade and did some stretching.
Swim
  • 30m 13s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 50s / 100 yards
Comments:

I did better than the last year but not as good as 2006 (30:13, 31:02, 29:39) I did do some drafting which I have never consciously tried before. Had a bunch of people swim over me at random parts of the course, for now "good" reason, i.e. it wasn't crowded and they could easily have gone around.
What would you do differently?:

not much, just be better prepared with more training prior to the even (this will be a theme...)
Transition 1
  • 04m 51s
Comments:

Slower than both previous years, had lots of trouble with my gloves (I know, just forget them) and took time to put on both knee wraps although I never pulled up the right one...so it was really a calf warmer ;-) Slowest transition of all three years (4:51, 4:48, 3:36) Ate only a bite of the cliff bar, not sure if I should have had more.
What would you do differently?:

forget gloves?
Bike
  • 1h 27m 33s
  • 24.6 miles
  • 16.86 mile/hr
Comments:

Okay, I know we always complain about head winds but OMG!!! There were times when the wind was so strong I was going only 13mph on a flat road!!!
Wasn't so bad considering I hadn't trained AT ALL!! Only 4 minutes off last year, when I also hadn't really trained... (1:27:33, 1:23:33, 1:24:10) Would like to actually run this race with good training.
What would you do differently?:

Make sure to put the bike in LOW gear not HIGH :-(
Actually train instead of doing only 3 rides in a year!
Transition 2
  • 04m 18s
Comments:

Had forgotten to take off my toe-ring bandaids after the swim and so I had to take my socks off to remove them before putting on my running shoes which meant I had to sit down instead of just changing standing. (4:18, 4:58, 2:51)
What would you do differently?:

Wish I knew what I did the first year to have a T2 of only 2:51
Run
  • 1h 18m 1s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 12m 34s  min/mile

Not sure, I guess be better trained on the bike ;-)
Post race
Warm down:

Med Tent!!! Here I go again! Wasn't feeling quite right with the breathing, seeing stars, wasn't wheezing, so I decided to sit and wait to see if it cleared up...after about 10 minutes, when it hadn't, I asked one of the medics if they had an inhailer other than proventhal as it hurt my lungs and I didn't want to use it, he insisted on listening to my lungs and gave me an albuteral/oxygen treatment...that didn't seem to help and when he stood me up I almost "went out on him", got very dizzy, saw stars and stumbled so they put me in a bed and made me breath oxygen...my pulse ox was 100% and I still wasn't wheezing but I couldn't talk without getting short of breath and I couldn't stand up without getting dizzy. After about another 15 minutes I started to feel better and the doc discharged me. Audrey cleaned up my transition area as every time I bent over I got dizzy again and I went to get some food. After a little food and a few minutes of sitting I started to feel more stable and we got in the car and left for KY.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor training on the bike...
Will use my inhailer next year :-(
