Swim
Comments: Distances seemed to be pretty similar from bouy to bouy. I tended to drift right, away from the bouey on the first leg, I was so nervous and just kept running into people or getting run into myself! I was breathing solely on the right for the first leg. On the second leg, still hadn't hit my stride but I could bilaterally breathe at that point. Tried to keep my breathing steady and my HR down. Third leg I think I found Noelle and hit my stride. AT the 4th leg, I was swimming next to Noelle the whole time and using her as my object to site :) She kept me going the whole 2nd half of the race. I said a little prayer for us during the 4th leg and then she kicked it up a notch and I followed, of course! Coming out of the swim was the best feeling! What would you do differently?: Be calmer on the start. Just take my time and get into a rhythm early on. Be stronger on my bilateral breathing. I forget that it's just like swimming in the pool...I try to get in more breaths by single-side breathing, just in case a wave hits me and I'll miss a breath. Transition 1
Comments: Hard to get wetsuit off, as always. Hard to get socks onto wet feet! tried to dry off as much as possible, but i had blisters later from wet feet. Would do a better job of drying off next time. Run with the bike was good adn clipping in was fast, just have to be better at quickly getting on the bike. Bike
Comments: Started off SLOW on the bike. wind was in my face and I was holding a 16 pace for a little while. Then i started passing people which boosted my confidence. turns were hard and i tended to hit the breaks when there was enough room to really attack them. it was tricky to have to watch for potholes. I rode low on the bars, and tried to ride aero for a while until the course got crowded. Legs felt tired for the first little part, maybe cause I had a long run too close to the race, but I pushed through them. it was good motivation to see brian and greg up ahead of me. Tried to use my hip flexors for part of the race to save my quads. What would you do differently?: just train so i can ride aero. get my drinking a little smoother so i don't have to come out of aero...well, learn to use my aerobars and bottle would just do the trick. Put my bike number on the seat tube instead of the top tube so it doesn't rub my legs. Transition 2
Comments: this was FAST for me. unstrapped my shoes, slid into running shoes, grabbed a sip of water, put my visor around my neck and Grabbed my race belt. where did the time go? I think I got behind 5 people who had just wiped out prior to the bike chute, and they were a little slow. I heard Beth, Jill and Janet cheer, and Jonathan snapped a picture which was motivating when i was just feeling sluggish. What would you do differently?: not sure...get a hat so i don't have to re-do my nasty hair at that point? easier than a visor? Run
Comments: when i was about to cross the mat, i was thinking, "What the heck am I doing these things for?" Starting the run was hard and it took at least 1/2 a mile for my legs to stop screaming at me. I just felt so slow, but at mile 1, my time was 7:45, so I knew i was doing something right. I just kept on following some fast guys, hoping to not get too far behind. Mostly I just stayed in my own little world and could see where an Ipod would come in handy. No ITB pain, and just a little stitch from being dehydrated about 2.5 miles into it. I was able to pick it up a little at the end, but i was just so happy to be finished that i didn't care about time! What would you do differently?: Learn how to drink water; practice the bike to run transition over and over again to get used to that jello feeling and to get myself used to feeling slow but running fast Post race
Warm down: 3 cups water, no stretching, which killed me later as my piriformis muscles on both sides seized up on me. cheered on friends and took sweaty post-race pictures with everyone. What limited your ability to perform faster: at 2 points in the race, I though, " I should pick it up and really try to place in my age group", then I thought, "No way, these women are fast", and then I thought that if i picked it up on the bike and wasn't able to run across teh finish line that would be pretty pathetic and not something I wanted to do. Therefore, finishing the race was more important than placing and I turned down my competitive side. But, from now on, having finished my first race, I can turn on those fast urges and really go for it! Event comments: Fun race! I'd definitely do this again, esp since there are so many familiar faces around to cheer for! Last updated: 2008-04-08 12:00 AM

Got up at 5:15am after a good sleep. I was all packed and ready to go for the race, which was a good feeling to know that I didn't have to scramble around to find things. 1 C coffee with 2 splendas, some smart start, little bit of milk and a banana over the course of 5:30-5:45. I'd stick with this breakfast again. Had a little prayer time, enjoyed the peaceful morning, loaded my bike up and hit the road at 6:00am! Got to breezy and met up with Kate and her family. We had our bikes checked in and set up our transition area. It was good to have a friend. noelle, brian and Missy showed up a little later and it was good to have more support of friends.
set up the transition and took a quick 10 minute warm-up on the bike with Brian to check my gears. IT was good to know that speeds would be slower going out and faster coming back, if the winds stayed constant. Also nice to know about the potholes everywhere!
