Comments: Went out with the mindset that I wanted to really pace myself. This is my first race, ever so I wanted to make sure I could complete it. Nerves left me after about .5 miles and I really never got into a rhythm. What would you do differently?: Go out a little faster. When I look at my time for this vs. the 5K I really was conservative. Transition 1
Comments: Didn't really know what to expect so I was quite a bit slower than most. What would you do differently?: Not sure. Probably not taken so much time. I was deliberate with everything I did on purpose. Could have probably saved :30 or so. Bike
Comments: Well I felt like the bike was my best sport coming into the race and the data backs that up. This being my first race and not being familiar with the course I really enjoyed it. I felt pretty powerful on the hills and pedaled through most of the downhills. My calves started to tighten a little bit at about mile 14...I'd been there before. They didn't lock up, however which was good. I was really pleased with this for my first race! What would you do differently?: I'd try to drink even a little more. I downed 1 bottle completely and started briefly on the second. I also had a GU at mile 10 and would've drank more water then. Transition 2
Comments: Same as T1 really, except I stopped in the transition area to stretch my calves which were starting to cramp. That took me an additional :15 or so. What would you do differently?: Nothing really. I had landmarks noted before the race and was happy with this as my first experience. Run
Comments: Even though the time wasn't super, I was really pretty pleased with this run. It was my first ever, the furthest I had trained was about 3.5M and with the first run I wasn't sure what to expect. My calves cramped up again about .3 miles in and I had to stop to stretch them. That helped and I didn't have the problem again. There was a real tall guy who I saw ahead of me who would walk, I'd almost catch him and then he'd run and blow by me. He did that for about the last 1.5 miles or so. Finally near the finish I saw him start to jog and I kicked it, beating him by a couple seconds. Had I a better feel for the course, I would've pushed harder after the HS because I had plenty of gas left in the tank. What would you do differently?: I need to figure out how to keep my calves from cramping. This happened to me 3 times during bricks and again today. Fortunately my run with DeannaS and Anna taught me to stretch them mid-run. That worked. I would also have upped the tempo. I really think I could've probably run sub-9 but being my first race I was pretty conservative on both runs. Post race
Warm down: Met JMWebs and Scoobysdad who I met earlier. Also meet djdavey and sgoehner as well as Kyle, a pal of JM's. It was great to finally meet some of the BTers and I'm looking forward to the next time! Event comments: What a great way to celebrate life. This was more than just a race for me (see my blog from Saturday). I'm very humbled by all the great people I've met! Last updated: 2008-04-15 12:00 AM

This being my first race, I was a little nervous. I got up at 3:30, took a shower, had 2 pieces of toast with PB and some coffee. Loaded up the truck and headed to Pewaukee.
A little stretching (not as much as I'd like) and a lot of trips to the porta-potty! Was standing in line for the bathroom when the first wave went off, but did make it in plenty of time!
