Swim
Comments: This course is perfect for me. Not OW, no sharks to worry about. Not choppy and pretty calm. Sort of like a pool with a lot of people in it. The sides of the lake are high, to help protect from wind so the lake won't be too choppy. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Transition 1
Comments: T1 was ok. No problems. I didn't get as burned as last time but I still missed some areas. I need to remember to get the places you don't think about, like under the sleeves and tri shorts, because the sleeves and shorts ride up a bit during the ride, and then I get burned. What would you do differently?: Apply sunscreen better. Bike
Comments: My performance was on par with last year. Strong first loop, and bonking and suffering the last two. I tried my nutrition plan but it didn't work for some reason. I couldn't muster any more gels or even gatorade. I had to just drink water for the last couple of hours. I also had a very bad headache. It might have been heat exhaustion or dehydration but I did pee almost at every pit stop and my pee was clear so it wasn't that. Maybe just the heat. Towards the end, the aid stations started running out of things like one didn't have water bottles but I couldn't hold down the gatorade so it really sucked. What would you do differently?: Need some sort of backup for the nutrition but not sure what it is. Transition 2
Comments: I was so dead. My legs were shot and I was just glad to get off that stupid thing. I forgot my blistershield for the feet and I suffered for it later. I did take 2 excederine migrane medicine as I had a bad headache. I let the sunscreen lady lather it for me. I felt bad for her, because I was all salty and dirty but she said I wasn't the first ;) Overall, an uneventful t2. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Run
Comments: I walked the whole thing except for some spurts to keep on pace of "just barely making it." I couldn't run at all. I couldn't hold down anything, no gels, no gatorade. Only water, ice, some fruit, and broth. I was exhausted and not feeling well. What would you do differently?: Practice nutrition and train. Post race
Warm down: I was very sick. After crossing the line, I grabbed a pizza and coke and sat down. I tried to sip the coke but was not feeling it. I was dizzy, my arms and legs and body started going numb. I thought I was going to feint and just die right there. Someone grabbed medical for me and they helped me walk to medical. I sat down and they gave me a silver blanket and some gatorade. They told me I probably had lack of salt and electrolytes because I didn't drink any gatorade or gels for the last 1/3 of the race. What limited your ability to perform faster: Under trained. Event comments: I hope the november race is not as windy. I like the event because it's close but the wind sucks. Day before, several days before, started taking my ginger pills to counter my regular seasickness.
Race morning, drank 3 ensure at 2:30AM for 750 calories. Went back to sleep. Woke up an hour later and drank about 100 calories of gatorade regular formula. Went #2, put on the blistershield on the nipples, crotch and arse, and dressed in tri shorts and a body glove surfing rash guard I always wear under my wetsuit, and put on some sweatsuit.
Got to transition and dropped off my special needs for bike, went to pee one more time, got my wetsuit on, and took 2 dramanine non drowsy formula 45 minutes before. Drank several sips of gatorade and took 1 GU gel.
No warmup needed. Had to conserve energy.
