Swim
Comments: People commented later that they think the course was longer than 1500m. My sighting wasn't great, I felt like I was zig zagging a lot. One frustrating part about starting in such a small group is that you don't really have the opportunity to draft off anyone unless you happen to start right beside them. I felt consistent, maintained bilateral breathing almost the whole time, which was great. My time sucks, really not impressed with that, as I know I am capable of a 27 min 1500m, so this was not a great swim, but I felt good given that it was so cold and the first open water race of the season for me. What would you do differently?: Push harder and work on sighting. A coach of mine is offering an OWS clinic which I hope will help this for the next race. Make sure I put enough body glide around my neck! Transition 1
Comments: Slowest Transition ever. I believe this is included in the bike time. It seemed like the ladies were standing around chatting. I just kept swearing, trying feverishly to rip my damn wetsuit off. I had to pull on arm warmes and gloves because of the conditions. What would you do differently?: Maybe wear the arm warmers under my wetsuit so I don't have to fiddle with them in T1? HTFU Bike
Comments: Lap 1: focus on warming up and drying off. Immediately try to eat some figs and sharkies in my bento - knowing the sooner I eat something, the more likely it won't cause me a hassle on the run. Kola NUUN - yum. High cadence to get the blood flowing to the legs. Lap 2: Focus on catching people. Catherine said that Cindy was just ahead of me when I started out of T1, so I knew I could catch her. I did, along with Kaylee and then Robin as well. That was a huge confidence booster. Later Cindy said to me that she was going to stick with me on the bike, but then 2 minutes later she couldn't see me anymore. HA HA HA :) loved that. :) Lap 3: A couple of men (relay) were coming by at this point, hammering. Didn't let it bother me. Focusing on good power, consistency, and smart gearing. Lap 4: Last Lap! Kick A$$ and give it all I've got. Standing on hills and catching people as much as I can. Felt great. Starting to think about the run. What would you do differently?: I don't know... maybe go faster... I felt pretty good and was really happy with my bike - maybe just more hill repeats to help on those brutal hills where I came to a crawl a few times. Transition 2
Comments: I knew this was going to be a bad Transition, since I could no longer feel my entire left foot, and a portion of my right foot. I also had to PEE. I sat down, and started talking to myself, saying what I needed to do 'sock, sock, sock, sock... shoe shoe shoe shoe... helmet off, hat on, gloves off, run, run RUN!!!' Oy, was not really lookign forward to this. What would you do differently?: Figure out how not to have numb feet off the bike? Run
Comments: Started out thinking 'if I can't feel my feet, can I even do this, or am I going to do irreparable damage?' As well, my stomach sounded like a gallon of milk, it was not pleasant. Ran to the first patch of bushes and went pee... ahhh, good idea! :) Took me one loop just to get the feeling into my feet. Didn't let myself walk ever, so that was a highlight I guess. Couldn't get my cadence up on the run, everyone who passed me had such fast feet. Last lap I was really just trying to give it all I had and kept asking myself 'are you pushing yourself enough that you want to puke? because you should!'. Had a good strong finish, no one near me to challenge me in, it was my own moment which was nice. What would you do differently?: Train more, run more, work on speed work, drills, hills/stairs and overall cadence. Post race
Warm down: Nearly started crying at the finish, I was just so glad it was over, and that I felt that I gave it a good effort (mostly because of the bike). Walked around a little, had some chocolate milk, went to the washroom some 3 or 4 times, and just hung out and relaxed. Didn't actively stretch. What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of training for the run. Event comments: I never like the food here, it always tastes like powdered grainy sauce on pasta, ewww. Great prices, I even won a pair of shoes from the Tech Shop! Beautiful day, a million times better than last year! Last updated: 2008-04-17 12:00 AM

The night before was a long one - went to dinner at the boss' house which had been planned for months. Had salmon, veggies, brown rice and asparagus and carrot cake for dessert! Very tasty. Even indulged in a glass of white wine, which was tasty. then went to a house cooling party for some friends, left around 10:30. Home to organize my things for the race the next day, got everything in order for the morning.
Woke up at 5:15. Had some oat bran (never buy the generic stuff, the organic is SO much better) and a smoothie (berries, yoghurt, milk, juice, soy protein). At a banana after setting up transition.
Got to the race site around 6:45 and racked my bike. Got body marked and my timing chip, set up my stuff, chatted with friends, and climbed into my wetsuit. Got in the water about 10mins before the gun, to get a feel for the water again, it felt much warmer than Thursday! Did a couple warm up
