Swim
Comments: I trained for the swim virtually 2 weeks before the race, hence my terrible time. Note to self- you can wing a run, not a swim OR tri for that matter! JESUS! What would you do differently?: Um, SWIM!!! I would follow a planned schedule because that is how I perform at my best; when my training is structured. Take my brother's advice and swim min 4x/week. Also for this race maybe have cheap "throw-away" flip flops... the walk from transition was somewhat long but it didn't bother me too much. Transition 1
Comments: I was "that chick"; my helmet was not where I had left it (purposely on top of bike- like everyone else). Someone had knocked it down and it was about 2 T sites over. Exiting swim was huge relive and wetsuit stripping was fast however major time was lost with putting on watch (garmin) and leaving to mount bike without helmet thus going back to get helmet (ARGH!). What would you do differently?: 1. Wear watch in swim and throughout race (recently a smaller more efficient one). 2. NEVER again go with shoe straps however made for a quick T2 3. Secure helmet to bike minimizing chance of it falling Bike
Comments: Bike was good. I had been averaging a 19 or so at White Rock during focused workouts so I was pretty pleased with 18.6 for my first tri. I passed several people and was only passed by maybe 3 chicks who "meant business". I rode on lower bars the entire race. Shoe straps were non-fuctional. Well, one was on fine, the left was off and strap was dragging on the ground. That said, no pulling up on my left! Sucked. What would you do differently?: I was overall pleased... only thing I would change: 1. No shoe straps, use clips. I have clips but I guess I wanted a quicker transition and felt I didn't have much experience yet in the clipping dept. Transition 2
Comments: No "riding with feet on top of shoes". I'm not at that level, yet! Maybe next race... No "jumping off moving bike" either. " " Running with bike was fine- good at navigating it simply from behind with right hand on seat. Shoes were already on so it was a fairly easy T unlike T1. Legs were killing.. took awhile for me to pick up the pace. What would you do differently?: 1. learn how to ride with feet on top of shoes 2. learn how to jump off moving bike Run
Comments: I was dying at the beginning. Holy cow my legs killed- guess I rode harder than I thought OR maybe I just didn't do enough brick workouts (hmmm). Anyhow all I could think was I wasn't 100 yards into it yet and thought, "UGHHHH". My garmin indicated my starting pace was roughly 9 pace (yikes!), so I picked it up. Ever done the shuffle? That's how bad my run started. It got better as I proceeded through and I ran a negative split (does that even apply to such a short distance!!??). At the end I sprinted in. I always wonder if that means maybe I could have ran a bit harder when I have that much energy still at the finish. I started around a 9 pace (according to garmin), SLOW!! What would you do differently?: 1. possibly wear a visor 2. do more bike/run training Post race
Warm down: Walking around, going back to cheer on Christine and Jill who were still racing. Stretched a bit. Once they all came in we got in line for the food- pizza, beagles, orange slices (my favorite!), and this GROSS pickle electrolyte drink. I guess it's a new drink? It was disgusting. Some guy commented that all the athletes drink it ... Jill turned and said to me "what are we!???" HAH What limited your ability to perform faster: Lack of swim practice Stupidity of missing helmet incident Lack of swim practice Lack of swim practice Event comments: I don't have any Tri's to compare this to but I thought it was an awesome race especially for my first time- perfect actually. It was not intimidating, very organized, everyone was super friendly and helpful. Food was great, beer was better =) Last updated: 2008-04-20 12:00 AM

Woke up and was out of bed first of Jill and Christine. Took a hot shower immediately and began to get ready while having some of Jills instant oatmeal with a banana. Not much sleep during the night (naturally) but was feeling pretty good beside the norm race day stuff. We were out the door by 5:15ish. Firsts to arrive at markings! Set up bikes, used portas (several times =)
and chatted with C&J. Drank my 20oz cytomax mix during set up. Last few minutes before transition closing we put wetsuits on to our waists and had a bit of a walk to swim start where we hung out for awhile. Luckily there were restrooms (not portas, restrooms!) up on the beach where everyone waited. Next time we may want to get cheapie flip flops for the walk however it didn't bother me much.
