Swim
Comments: Watched the first groups get pounded and some initial swimmers give up right away. Since swimmer grew up on coast knew to swim then duck uner waves. That made the first 50 (think it was more like 60 or 70) out to buoy a little bit easiers the ones trying to muscle thru the waves clearly had it harder. Made the turn and used the current (no drafting) to get to next Buoy. Got a few waves in but trouble came when getting out. Heavy suit and longer swim than expected combined to wind swimmer. Some time lost making way up beach then to Transition bike rack where tagged swimmer What would you do differently?: Lighter wetsuit. Train for worse case scenario swim like this one so more ready if time in water doubles from what is expected based on last few years results. Transition 1
Bike
Comments: Biker strongest leg of our team but also got all the transition time counted for his overall time. Never was passed and passed a number of younger whipper-snappers. (Had a guy draft for a number of miles and was pissed that same guy wound up with a trophy. You know who you are and should be ashamed you accepted that trophy over someone who competed fairly.) What would you do differently?: Yell at the drafter to stop cheating Transition 2
Run
Comments: Lots of folks going out at the same time but just watching for guys with a "t" on their legs to make sure they did not pass but were instead passed. Got passed by young whipper-snappers but passed two other "T"s along way. Kept up pace most of the way. and rang goal of sub 8 minute miles (watch showed different time than time given) What would you do differently?: Train harder earlier with more intervals to bring down time and teach young pup a lesson! Post race
Event comments: This was all our first Triathlon ever and a fun way to start with a 3rd place trophy and 4th place overall among teams. Goal is to improve for next year and teach those male teams that were 20 years younger to respect their elders! Great info leading into the race by Manatee and others much appreciated. Great race, proper balance between fun and competition though sad to see at least one take advantage of relaxation of monitoring to gain competitive advantage for a trophy. Pasty White Old Guys Team came down from Atlatna the afternoon before stayed at a friend's condo in Gulf Shores ate a pre-race meal that night at DeSotos Fish house where we had grilled grouper over angelhair pasta. We all got to an early bed after a long drive down. Woke up at 5:30 all had a little coffee, water. Biker had a yogurt, runner had half a powerbar.
Got to the race and parked then unloaded gear. Swimmer got on wetsuit and headed down to the beach where runner was with camera to record for posterity.
