Pre-race routine:

The lights flipped on at 4:07 a.m., which in more specific terms is waaaay to freakin' early for the normal to rise. Since normal doesn't apply, I hauled my cookies out of bed only after counting five good reasons to skip the race. Got dressed, double checked my gear, ate a bagel with PB, drank copious amounts of water and Heed and at 5 a.m. was on my way to the race with the Lauras, Ellen and Scott. (Starting to Tri, Whizzzzz and Schmize from BT).
Event warmup:

Since we were there so early, there was a lot of standing around, socializing, etc. I checked my tires, made sure my bike was okay after getting poured on, several port-a-potty trips and eventually it was time to consider putting on my wetsuit. Did a quick few strokes in the water to "warm up" (ha) and made my way to the start area. Somewhere in there, it was announced that the race would be delayed due to fog. In total, the race started an hour late.
Swim
  • 33m 34s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 35s / 100 yards
Comments:

Sighting was tough due to the fog. I stayed out and to the side after getting mowed over a few times. Still freaks me out a bit. I caught someone's heels about half way through and enjoyed the ride for about 1/4 of the swim but they pooped out and I had to carry on.
What would you do differently?:

Each time I do a wave start, I get a bit braver than before. I need more aggression so I don't have to swim extra distance.
Transition 1
  • 05m 43s
Comments:

I took my time during transition. I wasn't out to prove anything and I had never dealt with my wetsuit during a race before. I did forget to take my bike gloves out of my transition bag. (Duh.) I would have jumped on my bike but there was a gaggle of folks that prohibited that action.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Go faster, of course. And remember the gloves. Like the Alamo, only different.
Bike
  • 2h 58m 8s
  • 56 miles

Comments:

I killed this ride, for me. I went as hard as I could and spent time picking out targets and plucking them off. There was a group of women that I played cat and mouse with on some of the rollers. They would pass me on the upslope and I would fly past them on the downhill and flats. That started around mile 10 and went until 18. I finally ditched them for good and played cat and mouse with another guy I picked up around 30. That lasted the rest of the ride and was fun. We kept egging each other on. No idea who this person was but he helped make the ride really fun.

What would you do differently?:

I think my time would have been slightly faster if I had gotten my new cassette before the race. There were times my legs had it in them to go faster but I was just out of gears.
Post race
Warm down:

Packed up most of my stuff and went looking for where my chip should go, where my medal was, etc. Had myself a minor mental celebration about my ride too.

Interesting part about the aquabike is that once you enter transition, it's over. No pomp and circumstance, no cheering, nothing really. Except done. Weird.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of sleep the night before. I was yawning all morning waiting for the race to start. Also, my dislike of others in the water.

Event comments:

There were a few missteps regarding the aquabike (what wave we were to go off in and what to do after we finished) and actually stating what time transition opened. I am a wee bit disappointed about not having my first test into the HIM distance not captured at the end.
