Pre-race routine:

Got up super early and had my ritual cereal and coffee. Bikes, tools, and gear were packed up the night before. So I could get the most amount of sleep.
Event warmup:

Went out and pre-rode a large portion of the course to see what the roads were like. Ran about a mile and made a pit stop at a bush.
Run
  • 20m 29s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 06m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I ran this at tempo pace. Was really working on pacing for the whole race, so I went a bit easier than an open 10k. Watched my HR the whole time and backed off a bit. The idea was to be conservative until the second run, and see what I felt like. Maybe was a bit too conservative, but I think what I gained in insight far outweighs the little time I would have made if I threw everything at the wall.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe go a little harder, but I'm happy with my result.
Transition 1
  • 01m 2s
Comments:

Ran down the wrong row. I always do that. No big deal though, may have lost max 15 seconds. Socks got soaked running in the rain.
What would you do differently?:

Tie a big, pink, helium balloon next to my bike on the transition rack.

Comments:

Mildly conservative on the bike as well. Went hard but I definitely wasn't killin' it. Last year I always went hard on the bike and paid dearly on the run. My goal was to keep my HR in the low to mid 160's and see how that set me up for the run. Got passed by someone on the dam and almost gave chase, but decided to stick to the plan (caught him on the run that never happens for me). Was also assessing the new bike and position. It felt pretty stinking good. It was cool to be on a disc and tubs again. I missed the whomping sound and the feel of sewups.
What would you do differently?:

Not much. I think I'm capable of throwing down another 10-15 watts on top of this, but it's early in the year and I got a lot of racing ahead.
Transition 2
  • 00m 42s
Comments:

Much faster than the first transition, but Meg said it's cuz the bike was between my legs and I didn't have to look for it. Very funny but very true.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing

Comments:

Felt fine on the second run. Got my legs underneath me pretty quick. It took about a 1/4 mile and then I started pushing the pace a little bit. Caught the guy who passed me on the dam and went by him pretty quick. Reeled in a few more people. Got passed by a guy who I'm pretty certain was drafting me on the bike (effin' sleezeball). Every time I looked back he was right there.
What would you do differently?:

Just like the first go a little bit harder
Post race
Warm down:

Not a whole lot. Was watching for my bad ass wife (hotrodmeg) to come through transition, so I could cheer for her.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much everything went the way it was supposed to. Getting ready to start doing harder tempos and speedwork. Base phase is over so quality will take more priority over quantity.

Event comments:

First and foremost I cannot stand drafting. If someone is behind me they've all but signed a release form that allows me to spit, snot, and swerve all over the road. Beyond that Racing Underground has some super fun races. I'll be racing Tinman next weekend and intend to go hard at that race. I'll be using it to make sure everything is in order for Lake Stevens. I also want to use Tinman to figure out my wattage numbers, HR's, and nutrition. So I'm pretty excited about next weekend.
