Pre-race routine:

We camped the night before close to the race site, which saved me the travel time but also meant that I did not really sleep well. Had my usual breakfast cereal, milk and a banana.
Event warmup:

None really, just got into the water and swam around for a couple of meters.
Swim

  • 804 meters
  • 01m 46s / 100 meters
Comments:

I had an excellent swim, the previous week (race) I had a really bad anxiety attack but I overcame that this week. I think I did this in two ways: 1) I mentally prepared myself and told myself that it would not happen 2) I made sure that I breathed out properly, exhaling fully and hard.
What would you do differently?:

Swim Faster :)
Transition 1
  • 01m 33s
Comments:

Still using my road shoes but I have now bought some Tri Shoes and will practice pre mounting the shoes and then getting into them.
What would you do differently?:

Practice more but overall I learn't some excellent tips and applied them. It worked.

Comments:

This is were the wheels fell off the bus or better said the chain broke! I had changed my wheels to a lighter wheel set and the cassette for that wheel set is a 25-12, I think the bike and chain was geared for a 23-11, I called the bike shop and they gave me the all clear to ride like this. Anyway after my 46 mph downhill haul I started to work my way back up, chain kept skipping, fell off about 4 times and then broke and tore apart my rear derailleur (really it did) thank God this did not happen on a downhill, everything just locks up until it gives. It also got caught on some of my spokes so these have to be replaced too.

So I got off my bike and started running (bike shoes off shoved in the back of my bike shorts) I ran until I would get to a downhill and then I coasted, on so forth for about 5-6 miles. By the way everyone in Harriman State Park was driving a COMPACT car today, no SUV's, not one marshal on a motorbike either and no sweep vehicle.

Funny I just looked at my socks, full of holes underneath......

What would you do differently?:

Test ride the bike for a longer period before attempting something like this.

Post race
Warm down:

Walked about 5 miles to the finish.

Event comments:

I think this is a nice local race, some basics could be improved, there is no "little pool" to run through to get the sand off your feet. There was no sweep vehicle on the course.

On the other hand the race goddies were nice, nice little shoe bag, and shirt, post race food and drink was good too.
