Pre-race routine:

It was all a blur. Packed my bags the night before, woke up early and biked over to the course with my mom. Setup my transition area or atleast tried to make it look like everyone elses... i had NO idea what i was doing! I had done a few "warmup" swims the week before and had decided that i would swim without a wetsuit. I figured it would save me some time in transition (i would need all the help I could get). Well, when i showed up to setup my transition area EVERYONE around me was suiting up in full suits. I began to panic thinking I had made the wrong decision. I was sure the water temp had dropped 10 degrees overnight and I missed the memo. It didnt even occur to me to walk down to the water and test it out myself. Instead I panicked and stirred up all the butterflies I could muster! I ended up wearing my wetsuit jacket that I had brought as a backup.
Event warmup:

Nearly forgot to stretch, but managed to do something resembling stretching as I was frantically searching for my two best friends to show up to see my FIRST triathlon and dreading the announcer to call wave #6 to the line. Yikes!

Comments:

This was my first time swimming in any kind of event so I was VERY nervous! When the called my wave to the start I was pleasantly surprised in how warm the water was and instantly scoulded myself for not sticking with my original plan of swimming without a wetsuit. The swim started and the water was clear enough to see the eel grass at the bottom of the bay and all of the jellies. I did everything in my power to just focus on the swim and not the sea life! Made it around bouy one and before i knew it i was coming around the last bouy and in my last leg of the swim. Just as i was getting tired i heard my mom screaming my name from the dock and i added a little extra umpgh to finish. Thanks mom!
What would you do differently?:

Trust my instinct, swim a little harder!
Transition 1

Comments:

I dont have my exact time for T1 but i know i was slow. I think it was somewhere around 5 minutes. Even though I only wore the Wetsuit Jacket it still took some time to peel it off. Had to pull on my bike shorts, helmet, shoes, etc... fiddled with my gloves and nearly forgot my sunglasses.
What would you do differently?:

Listen to my mom and forget the gloves...

Comments:

The bike was very quick! Once I got out of the transition area and started down the road I felt strong! I wasnt sure exactly how my legs were going to hold up and i didnt want to burn out for the run, so I rode strong but held back a little. I passed some riders but mostly got passed, but the important part is that no one from my age group passed me! Saw my mom starting her first lap as I was finishing my last lap. Got to return the favor and give her a quick motivating yell.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder!
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Again, not too sure of my T2 time, but it was slow. I spent too much time trying to tie my shoes... my fingers just weren't functioning like normal!
What would you do differently?:

I have already put the special laces in my shoes so i dont have to tie my laces again.
Run
  • 24m 11s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 04s  min/mile
Comments:

Running is the one leg that I am confident in. I am a solid runner, not super fast but a consistent runner. I think this is where I was able to make up some ground on my fellow age groupers. I held back a little on the first lap as I wasnt sure what the course held for me, but gave it all in the end.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder the whole time.
Post race
Warm down:

I finished the race to my two best friends screaming my name. I crossed the line, grabbed a water bottle and headed back to the finish line to cheer my mom across the line.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Everything was perfect except for my lack of knoeledge in triathlons. This being my first race i held back a little in fear of hitting the wall. But now that I know how quick the race is I am ready to really push it to the limits on my next Tri. Bring it on!

Event comments:

I finished my FIRST triathlon! I couldnt be happier!
