Swim
Comments: I hated the wetsuit. I had it pulled up until I was singing soprano, arms all the way in...but it never felt good. Very restrictive. My shoulders were killing me at the first buoy. I am glad I had the suit though. A little disoriented in the waves. It allowed me to just relax, get straightened out, then try to swim. I kept going out to sea. The guys in the 'yaks kept hollering for several of us to go in some. Held on the the kayak a couple of times. Totally winded. What would you do differently?: Key change is I have sent the full sleeved wetsuit back in exchange for a sleevless. I can swim fine even though it is slow, and the sleeves won't make a big difference speed wise. They just made my shoulders tired. Other than that, the experience was crucial. I now know what it's like to be in the water with a bunch of other people trying to navigate in the waves...Also, it didn't help I had to stop and cough up my lungs every 10 strokes...I was at the tail end of viral pneumonia which had really limited training for 3 weeks. Transition 1
Comments: wetsuit hung up on watch and timing chip. Totally forgot about timing chip and could not figure out why wetsuit hung up. Also, I wasn't 'racing'. I made sure I had everything.... What would you do differently?: Just go faster....Plus I won't be taking the extra time for the extended prayer of surviving the swim...experience will pay off for next race Bike
Comments: I went way too slow. I didn't have my HR strap and I always can tell by HR just how I stand and when I am about to crash. The first 5 miles of the bike I wanted to throw up secondary to the gallons of salt water ingested on the swim. The fast racers had a big advantage from one standpoint. The wind REALLY picked up with about 6 miles to go on the second lap. It was non-existent first lap. As I passed people (yes, I actually passed a few) they all commented on the wind sucking....they were right. My pace dropped considerably. What would you do differently?: Have HR strap....and ride a lot harder. Transition 2
Comments: Once again, very casual in transition. Obviously too casual. I mean, how long does it take to change a pair of shoes and strap on the alterra? What would you do differently?: be race ready, not so casual...A total of almost 10 min. in transition is ridiculous! Not gonna happen next time. Run
Comments: The run was easy. I was breathing easy and trying to feel out my legs to see if they were going to be an issue. I did have a quad cramp up. I stopped to stretch it by grabbing my foot and pulling it to my butt. MISTAKE!!! My hamstring immediately cramped 10x worse than my quad. Then I about fell over. I just started running again. Was at an 8:40 pace first 4 miles, then caught my wife. I walked/ran with her. I figured she was so instrumental in my getting this far, that we should finish together. (good thing she started before me, thus I beat her on overall time... :) What would you do differently?: More miles. I am hoping to get under 8/mi as my race pace. Post race
Warm down: patted myself on the back, kissed my wife (not in that order). Ate bananas, oranges...etc. Nice stretch session What limited your ability to perform faster: Pneumonia the last 3 weeks before the race was the main thing. Lack of experience was obviously a factor. Event comments: The first one was truly an experience I won't forget. I was happy I finished. 11/12 in my AG? No big deal. Next race it will be. Now I have a different mind set for the next races. I want to get better....My goal is for Jekyll '09 to finish in 2:30 (33 minutes less than this year) The swim I know how to fix with a combination of changing the wetsuit and lessons to work on technique. The bike and run just need more dedication....basically listen to all that say HTFU...Transition will be at race pace, not picnic pace.... To all those who gave advice along the way...THANK YOU!!!! Arrived much later than we planned. It was tough to find food. Not much in the local area at 5am. Add to that the fact that we overslept and we were pushing our comfort zone on arrival time. Transition closed at 7:15, we arrived at 6:45. This being our first race, it felt like we had 5 minutes to set up. I actually didn't have any problems...until I realized the swim cap was in the bag they gave us on signing in, and that was in the car. This was 7:15am...15 min. before they were set to go.
Warm up was the 400 yard run to the car to grab the swim caps, then back past transition, down to the beach, then another half mile to the start. Arrived to find it was a staggered start. Two at a time, 5 seconds apart. With my really slow swim time I submitted I was almost the back of the line, so my warm up was followed by 20 min of standing around.
