Comments:

Nothing worked well on the first leg. I was out of breath and had a high heart rate (150s+, higher than I have ever seen in the swim) any time I tried freestyle. I did backstroke most of the way, which helped breathing and heart rate somewhat, but not much. I wasn't sure how I was going to make it most of the way, but just kept at it. I had a little cramping in one calf. I probably used way too much kick on this leg.

Soon after rounding the buoy suddenly everything clicked. I got my head in the water, breathing felt great and I motored all the way back. It felt great. I had issues with calf cramping, but hoped it wouldn't continue later. The wind was with me on the way back, but I don't think that was the main problem on the way out?
What would you do differently?:

All I can think of is more open water training for my main problems. Training using less legs would help too, although I think I did ok with that on the way back.

Oh yeah, bathroom break!
Transition 1
  • 04m 26s
Comments:

The transition went okay. I'll need to practice this some time. My heart rate was 150 so I must have been running fast enough. Probably socks and shoes took too long.
What would you do differently?:

Practice taking suit off, bike shoes some day.

Oh yeah, bathroom break! I intended to stop but the porta johns were too far the wrong way.

  • 17.14 mile/hr
Comments:

Legs were obviously very tired when I started, not my usual strength. Again hills were tough, but this partly went along using them too much inthe swim.

Lack of bathroom break was a nagging issue, I thought of pulling over, but never found a convient time or spot.
What would you do differently?:

Practice swim more with less kick, practice hills more.
Transition 2
  • 01m 19s
Comments:

My best ranking! LOL, quicker without bike shoes to change. 2nd in age group! But I did motor, HR was 155. The only problem was sprint finishers hanging around getting in the way.

I really intended a bathroom break here, the porta johns were right in the crowd of cheering spectators, and I was looking good with a pretty good short lived stride coming out of transition.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really, just work on changing bike shoes 'when' I get them.
Run
  • 63m 41s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 15s  min/mile
Comments:

Obviously my worst event, and it should have been a lot better. Interestingly my ranking is right around my racetime rankings, so I guess most had slower runs.
What would you do differently?:

Again, less legs in the swim would have helped. Practicing drinking would help also, that just didn't work running. Plain ran out of gas.
Post race
Warm down:

Felt good, mainly drank up.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It started bad right away in the swim, and that hurt me the rest of the way. Light on training the last few weeks with a sprint race three weeks earlier.

Event comments:

Overall a great race.

First Leg 22:42 147 HR 2ns leg 17:07 148 HR The first leg was not very good, I could't keep my heart rate down doing freestyle and did most of the leg backstroke. I don't know what was up. I didn't have any anxiety, at least not too bad. It seemed like it would take for ever. The second leg went great. I got in a rhythym, got my face in the water and motored all the way. Except for leg cramping it went great. Then I got to the beach, legs were wiped, I wasn't sure I would be able to keep upright. Finally got my legs moving and ran.
Suit: Full, it was hot.
Course: The course seemed fine. I keep getting way right doing the backstroke, and also somewhat on the second leg. I probably added 10-20% to the first leg distance. I had boaters yelling at me to get back on course.

Overall: 280/384
Performance: Bad
8:21 first mile HR 159 felt okay in general but legs were cramping badly. 9:56 second mile HR 157, I stopped to stretch, which didn't help much, probably started walking some this mile. 11:00 mile 3,4 HR 152, walking up hills, at water stations. I was out of gas, I wasn't really going any slower walking than my running pace. I also convinced myself that adding 10 more minutes versus having more problems was okay. Looking back I wish I would have stuck it out. 11:30 mile 5 HR 150, walking/running up the big hill. Actually doing better at this time, side and gut pain better, legs managable. Ran a good portion of the big hill. 11:30 mile 6 HR 154, Mostly ran although the time doesn;t see to show it. Felt better.
