Pre-race routine:

Woke up early (4:00am) at the beautiful LaQuinta in Sheboygan, had a Clif Bar and a banana. Milled around for a while, then loaded the car and drove to the race site. Got a nice parking spot and got into transition at 5:30am.
Event warmup:

Mental preparation mostly; had mapped out the bike elevation so went backthrough the course in my mind. Walked through the swim-in/bike-out/bike-in/run-out routine; got transition set up and walked around looking at the cool bikes/gear.
Swim
  • 27m 48s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 41s / 100 yards
Comments:

Very good swim for me; TT start was interesting. I thought it would spread the swimmers out more than it did. Still had to fight through people, but I went to the right side bouys and found some open water.
What would you do differently?:

This was good improvement for me on the swim. I just need to swim more and become more efficient.
Transition 1
  • 03m 7s
Comments:

There was a long run from the swim exit to the bike. Wet suit got stuck around the knees and had to sit down to get it off, but overall pretty happy with this T1. I had practiced running with the bike/shoes clipped into pedals/getting up to speed and then slipping feet into shoes and did this much more efficiently than the duathlon in Appleton.
What would you do differently?:

Become more efficient at swimming so that I don't have to use a wet suit; water temp was such that I could have saved a minute or so in T1 w/o having to exit the suit.
Bike
  • 1h 18m 28s
  • 27.96 miles
  • 21.38 mile/hr
Comments:

This was a really hard bike course, but I found that I liked the hills a lot. Probably used too much energy on them, but it was really fun to power up the hills and then fly down the other side. So nice not to have to worry about traffic. Very happy with my gear selection, big ring, small ring, worked the gears a lot and still managed to stay aero most of the time. Really enjoyed this part of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Find more hills to train on, or get back on the Computrainer regularly.
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

Good T2 for me; slipped out of shoes with a block to go, jumped off bike and ran through the transition area. I went through the painful practice of training my feet to run without socks, so just slipped my shoes on and started on the run.
What would you do differently?:

fumbled a little bit with my race belt and lost some time. Maybe put race belt on in T1?
Run
  • 46m 33s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 07m 30s  min/mile
Comments:

Not what I wanted in terms of race pace (about 30 seconds per mile off), but after the tough bike and the hills on the run, it was all I had in my legs today.
What would you do differently?:

I have to believe that I'm healed from the injuries I've battled since January and ramp up the intenstiy on my run training. I used to take it for granted that I could fly on the run, now I have to work harder to get more out of it.
Post race
Warm down:

ate bananas, drank gatorade.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

weak run; have to ramp up the training on that. Get faster in the water. I did not hit my super secret goal of finishing in the top 5 of the age group. If I had, I was going to claim a spot in the AG National Championship race in Portland (I work in Seattle 2 weeks of every month, so Portland's an easy hop for that race over a weekend in Sept). Still qualifed for the AG Nat'l Championship race (top 33% of finishers in a qualifier get to go), but I don't feel it was competitive enough to warrant entering that race. Maybe next year.

Event comments:

This was by far the best race I ihave ever been in. The course was really challenging and the organization was fantastic. Started getting update emails from the RD months in advance of the race with recommendations on places to stay, course commentary, etc. Really hope to do this one again.
