Swim
Comments: The swim is my best event by far - I feel very comfortable in water and was on pace to hit my prior time of 28 minutes. The first 200 meters were a little rough as my wave had more people in it. Once I rounded the corner for the back stretch I was in a nice pocket all to myself (eventually passing members for the previous wave). What would you do differently?: I might have gone a little harder on this event knowing that it is my only good event - although I wanted to save some energy for the remaining events. Transition 1
Comments: A really - really long transition run - and muddy / sandy. Running with the bike got my sport drink all over my bars and computer! What would you do differently?: Sat down to get my wetsuit off and need to work on a smoother transition. Not to worried about the time improvement thought (20 seconds max). Bike
Comments: I did my own thing and had a good turn out. The great thing about the 4 loop course was that you knew what was coming up and which gears to be in at which point on the course. There were many sharp turns which made for a lower mph average, although the down hill section of the course was enjoyable. What would you do differently?: My biggest problem for the bike (which turned out to be the cause of my heat exhaustion) was the fact that I only had 1 bottle (tri bottle) which was filled with power aide. I meant to dilute this with water in transition, but ran out of time before it closed. The amount of sugar in my system gave me a nice boost on the bike - but left me dead on the run. Transition 2
Comments: Again a very long transition through sand / mud which did not allow me to take my shoes off on the bike dismount. Slipped out of the bike shoes and into the runners, downed a gu and headed out. What would you do differently?: I had my Garmin set for a buddy run - with the running buddy set for a 6 mile run at a 9:50 pace (i know that is slow - but I'm a horrible runner). I would rather have it just set to show my current speed and distance. Run
Comments: The run is my enemy. I had the goal of finishing the race at a 10 minute pace. My training runs are about a 9:10 pace overall and I figured that if I save my energy on the bike I would be able to easily hit a 10 minute pace. WRONG - I was so tired on the run from the lack of energy (see above bike problem) and the heat. I started off fine with a nice 9:50 pace for the first half mile. I decided to walk the aid stations in order to fully use the water and ice resources. As the miles started to add up - the only encouragement I had was to finish the race and make sure I looked somewhat alive when my wife was snapping photos of me. What would you do differently?: TRAIN TRAIN TRAIN - need to train in weather related scenarios and more bricks. The run has always been my down point but it should be one of the easiest to train for. Post race
Warm down: Crossed the finished line and knew something did not feel right - I was soaked with water / sweat / and ice and still I was not cooling down. Tried to eat and drink a little and my stomach did not agree with my actions. Found my wife and friends and was then directed to the medical tent for an ice down. Turns out that the amount of sugar on the bike and run was the death of me. Need to dilute my drinks more. What limited your ability to perform faster: HEAT Inability to mix sport drink with water ratio Event comments: My goal was to come in under 3 hours - I came in with 14 seconds to spare. Transition opened at 5:30 and closed at 6:30am, although my wave did not leave until 8:30. Yep that is right - an entire two hours of doing nothing - now thats out of the way....
I did not get much sleep the night prior but awoke abruptly at 5:15 as my bike was already in transition and had an end spot on the bike rack. Had my normal tri breakfast (natural oats bar) and meet up with the other team members in the lobby.
Got to transition (2 min walk from host hotel) and began setting up - got my swim stuff prepped and waited. Then waited some more. 8 waves went out prior to mine! I finally jumped in the water around 8:35 and it was about 90 degrees outside by that time. My goal for the event was a sub 3 hour oly distance.
