Pre-race routine:

Got up about 4:30, shower, ate a english muffin with PBJ. Drove about 1:20 minutes to the race site.
Event warmup:

Not a lot, swam a little to get in the water.
Swim
  • 22m 24s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 44s / 100 yards
Comments:

First OWS in a race. Never got uncomfortable, but I think I swam about 1000M in a 750M race. Sighting was terrible, basically I was all over the place. Tried to keep other swimmers in sight to stay on line, that worked OK until I lost them and was on my own. Overall though, I have to say I was fairly proud of myself. Since this was my first, I can only get better. Was a little worried about not swimming in a wetsuit, but it didn't seem to matter.
What would you do differently?:

LEARN TO SIGHT. I think I could have cut two minutes off my time if I would have swam I decent line. Definately going to make this my number one priority over the summer.
Transition 1
  • 02m 1s
Comments:

OK T1. Was definately a little wobbly after the swim and a fairly long run up to the transition area. Overall, did some things well, got my shoes on quickly and got on the bike fairly quickly.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing.
Bike
  • 37m 27s
  • 11.4 miles
  • 18.26 mile/hr
Comments:

I was feeling a little bit out of sorts after the swim. My legs weren't feeling all that great. Then I hit that first big hill and really struggled. It took me about 5 miles to really get my cycling legs, and after that I felt like I was cruising along. Passed a lot of other riders since I came out of the water so far back in the pack. Got a little dicey at times with the traffic.
What would you do differently?:

Take it a little easier at the bike start and work into my rhythm. I think I get the HR up too much early, instead of building over the ride. Unfortunately, with the biggest climb coming early in this course, you really didn't have a choice but to see your HR skyrocket.
Transition 2
  • 02m 40s
Comments:

Purposely took my time here. I wanted to calm down a little before the run since it was soooo hot out by this time (90 degrees). I think T2 was OK, could have been faster if I rushed it a little more.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 23m 53s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 41s  min/mile
Comments:

Did I mention it was hot. Heat and me don't go together very well on the run. It started out OK as I was running my normal race pace, but then hit a fairly good hill (course was supposed to be flat), and that kind of wiped me out. I struggled from there and did something I have never done before in a 5K of any type, TRI or otherwise, I actually stopped and walked a little ... I definatley didn't like that feeling, but I think the heat kind of got to me a little. Talked myself back into running after 10 seconds or so and felt like I finished strong.
What would you do differently?:

Don't walk. Felt like I kind of gave in to my mind, when my body was still able to keep running. Need to drink more during the run and not just pour water over my head.
Post race
Warm down:

Found some shade, drank some water and ate a bannana. Talked to some other racers including fellow BTer, JohnKav

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I kind of went into this race with the goal of getting thru the swim since it was my first OWS. After I got out of the water, I guess I didn't push as hard since I felt like I accomplished my primary goal for the race. Definately felt like my Bike and especially Run were sub par. But again, it was really hot for this time of the year, and haven't done much training in the heat ... especially running in the heat.

Event comments:

This was the inaugural event and I felt like it was well organized. Seemed to be enough volunteers to get the job done. Would do it again.

FEEL GREAT THAT I MADE IT THRU MY FIRST OPEN WATER EVENT. Now I feel like I have some level of confidence to enter other events with OW swims.
