Swim
Comments: It was pretty choppy and the swim gave several folks problems. My only issue was that the chop was coming in from my left side, and I don't breathe at all to the right; so, every time I wanted to take a breath, I was fighting off the likelihood of swallowing mass quantities of water. I mixed in a couple moments of breast stroke just so I could sight over the chop, but I kept a pretty good line. Even though I was not fast by any means, I had the 3rd fastest swim in my age group What would you do differently?: Relax a little earlier and not let the chop get to me. Other than that, I was pleased. First OWS in 2 years, so I'll take it Transition 1
Comments: Um....well....this has never been my strong suit. I like to relax in transition, ok? What would you do differently?: Actually try to move quickly...it is a race after all Bike
Comments: Strong crosswinds made for a little bit trucky handling. I have not trained much at all in the past several months, and my training pace on the bike has been sub 15 mph consistently. I pushed a little too hard today for my current fitness level, and it came back to bite me on the run. Pleased with my bike split; I just need to stay consistent and I'll be good to go by the end of the season. What would you do differently?: Not push quite as hard so that I hav eenough left to actually run; train more. Or, as Bear says...Ride Lots Transition 2
Comments: More relaxing; just not quite as much as in T1. Run
Comments: OK, I need to be honest with myself. Given my training volume, my training pace over the last month, my weight, and the stupid walk breaks I took today because my legs hurt coming off the bike, this is a GREAT pace for me. However, I am really, really disappointed in myself that I walked when I did and didn't push harder. Had I "upped" the pain tolerance just a bit today, and decided to HTFU, this run would have been in the 10's. The lack of toughness on the run is the only regret I have for the race. And I owe thanks to Aaron for coming out on the course and getting my butt in gear. What would you do differently?: Push harder. It's only 2 miles, I wasn't going to die, and had I pushed it through the whole run, I would have had a nice run split. Post race
Warm down: Visited with the awesome BTers, ate a bagel and drank some water. I didn't throw up, so I obviously didn't push hard enough on the run. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: 1) It has been two years since my last race at IMCDA, and much of those 2 years has been spent on the couch eating crappy food 2) See #1 Event comments: Thanks to everyone for the constant encouragement. It felt SO good to finally race again instead of talking about maybe racing and then bailing out. Thanks especially to Steve, Marcy, Marcy's mom, John, Bonnie and Aaron for the cheering section today. I now know what I need to do to get better, and I finally have a real, concrete reminder of how much fun this sport is; I had forgotten that over the past two years. Lots of work to do to get ready for the next race, which has a much tougher course and longer distances in all three disciplines. But I'm looking forward to it. I'm back....... Ate a clif bar, drank a bottle of Fresca Diet Black Cherry, and out the door to Grand Prairie.
Zilch. Bodymarked By John, visited with Aaron and Bonnie for a bit. Took a horrific phone call on my cell in which I learned that Steve's P2C committed suicide on the way to the race by jumping off his bike rack into the middle of highway 360. It bummed me out.
