Pre-race routine:

Raced with Ryan, my 9 year old son. His first tri. We got our stuff ready in transition and decided at the last min. to wear our wetsuits.
Event warmup:

Nintendo DS. Come-on, we're 9 years old!!
Swim
  • 13m 43s
  • 880 yards
  • 01m 34s / 100 yards
Comments:

Fun swim. Ryan and Dad did some passing and got crowded a couple times which made it a true tri experience. No aggressive swimmers. GREAT FIRST TRI SWIM COURSE!!!

Dredge work since last year was very nice.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 1
  • 02m 56s
Comments:

Ryan did great. Sock on wet feet was interesting for a 9 yr old. He ran out of transition with no prob. Mounted great on the new tar and chip lot.
What would you do differently?:

Find a way to avoid tar and chip if possible
Bike
  • 1h 08m 10s
  • 14.5 miles
  • 12.76 mile/hr
Comments:

Wind (Eastern Shore Hills) was more than I wanted for Ryan. 70 pounders blow around alot easier than the rest of us. He did it though.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 01m 5s
Comments:

Ryan was fast!!!
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Run
  • 38m 21s
  • 3.5 miles
  • 10m 58s  min/mile
Comments:

Tri runs are supposed to be hot and hard!!! We mostly ran but had to walk a little. Lot's of encouragement from racemates. THANKS IF YOU WERE ONE OF THEM. "Hey Dad, how do they all know my name?"
What would you do differently?:

Mid point water stop needed. Beginner tri run times are 30min+. Some don't get to first water for close to 20 minutes.
Post race
Warm down:

Mountain Dew then a quick nap right on the grass is just what Ryan needed.

Not a proponent of caffeine for kids, but he bounced back pretty fast!!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

It was the slowest, most enjoyable triathlon I will probably ever do. If you have ever thought about a tri with your kid, do it. Just be careful in considering the length of the event. Sprint was definately on the edge of Ryan's limits and he's a competitive swimmer. We have big slow diesel engines, they have weed whacker motors...

Event comments:

Fantastic early season event. Serves beginners and superfast sprinters equally. Hat's off to the organizers.
