Swim
Comments: This was my first open water swim and it turns out that I swim in a nice tight circle without a black line to follow. It was much harder than I thought to swim in open water, but I did ok. What would you do differently?: I need to learn how to sight and how to swim straight. The waves were pretty small I guess, but even that was enough to mess up my breathing. Practice I suppose..... Transition 1
Comments: T1 went fine. I didn't push it really that hard but I wanted to keep my heart rate under control. In my first race I went out way to hard on the swim and it killed the rest of my race so this time I tried to maintain some pace (including through T1). What would you do differently?: I need a tri top. My shirt went on ok, I didn't struggle, but that's just one more thing to deal with. Other than that it was fine. I could have rushed it a bit more but I didn't forget anything and so I was pleased with it. Bike
Comments: I should have suspected something when on the way out I hit 24 mph on an uphill without feeling like it was much of an effort and WITHOUT FEELING ANY BREEZE. Once I hit the turn around point I realized why. Almost got blown off the back of my bike after turning around, the headwind was so strong. Got passed by lots of guys with cool sounding rear disks, so that was fun. What would you do differently?: Nothing. I drank well, kept my cadence high, kept my heart rate under control. I really think that without the head wind I would have hit my target time. It was a good ride. Transition 2
Comments: Not sure why this was so slow, I felt like it went smoothly and there really isn't much to do. Took off my helmet, put on a hat, switched shoes, off I went. I got lock laces for my shoes so they went on fast, and I really do like them. Guess I'm just slow in transition.... What would you do differently?: Nothing, it went just as planned. I did take one last drink from my bike water bottle, that probably slowed me down more than it was worth. Should have had that last drink on the final stretch on the bike instead. Run
Comments: I started off feeling like I was slow, and I struggled a bit to get my breathing under control in the first half mile. But then I hit the 1 mile mark at 10 minutes and realized I was doing pretty well (10 min mile is fast for me). I ended with a time that I was quite satisfied with. What would you do differently?: Nothing. Post race
Warm down: Walked around a bit, drank 2 chocolate milks and had an ice cream bar (all provided by the race). I definitely should have sat down on the grass and stretched out my legs a bit, I was sore the rest of the day. What limited your ability to perform faster: Open water swim experience. Otherwise I just need to keep training to get my speed up. But I felt like I performed well given my current level of fitness. Event comments: I really liked this race, it was very well organized and run. There were a lot of drink stations during the event and food/drink after the race. Very well done, I'd definitely do it again! Last updated: 2008-06-08 12:00 AM

I have no established routine. I ate a donut at the hotel and off we went.
Warmup consisted of a bit of walking and slow jogging around the transition area before the race. Nothing much.
