Swim
Comments: yikes! i know i dont swim enough and i suck but this was bad lol. going out the first leg i did great and drafted pretty well while avoiding getting bashed, but after that i struggled. the course was basically a weird rectangle and i definitely swam a cirle lol. after the first turn i couldnt see into the sun and ended up way out to the right, grrrrreat....and did not get any draft. finally got to the next turn and went way wide again. i was so confused as to why i couldnt see anyone next to me until i figured out that i was about 200 yds to the right of everyone haha. just what i need, adding distance to a swim...so i just kept on going for what felt like forever until i finally hit land and knew i was good to go. saw 44 on my watch as i got to the beach but then had a good long jog to transition around all the flooded areas. What would you do differently?: swim more. swim straight. draft. dont swim a circle if the course is a rectangle... Transition 1
Comments: pretty good transition. somehow during the swim my right eye got something in it (either anti fog stuff or gas from the boats/jet ski's) and i couldnt see out of it which bothered me for awhile but after i rubbed it with my towel and started running out of t1 it went away. all the people in front of me on the way out were walking their bikes so i couldnt get around them which was kind of annoying but i figured i had a long day so i just chilled out and waited til they were out of the way. Bike
Comments: solid ride for me. passed about 440 people :) took it easy for the first couple miles while i drank, swalled some endurolytes, and took gel and then started to cruise. since i was in the last wave and i cant swim, i had a TON of people in front of me which probly helped and hurt at the same time. i got to slingshot draft off lots of people but there were at least 5 times where i had to hit the brakes to avoid people swinging out in front of me. lots of times i had to ride right on the yellow line because people were riding 3 wide and wouldnt move which was annoying. lots of hills but they were different than the ones around here because they werent short and steep but looooong! i didnt really mind them, just had to focus on not pushing it too much going up them. followed the birkie plan where i pounded the downhills to make the next uphill easy, i like that plan :) managed to drop my endurolytes within the first 5 miles somewhere which was a bummer because that was my heat protection lol but i decided i just had to drink lots and lots of gatorade endurance to get in the sodium i needed and stay hydrated. i found aj on the way back in from the first out and back and said hi and she looked like she was doing great! it was good to know that she had make it out of the water! found craig on the out part of the 2nd loop thing and yelled at him and talked for a bit but he told me to get moving so i did. about 5 min later i passed major david roselle (sp?) and told him to keep up the good work and he said thanks. it was cool to see the guy that i had watched do kona on tv :) the 2nd out and back was tough because it was uphill and into the wind on the way out but when i turned around i had a blast. almost the whole way back i was riding close to 30mph and passing people like crazy. the 3rd leg was almost the exact same with tough wind/hills on the way out and fun after the turn around. got to the cross for the last time and cruised home feeling great and ready to test out my leg on the run. What would you do differently?: not much, it was fun. keep working to get faster on the bike :) Transition 2
Comments: spent about a minute getting my leg brace thing on and digging out my back up supply of endurolytes then i whipped my shoes and hat on, grabbed my redbull and took off What would you do differently?: not hurt my leg so i have to waste time putting on a brace. Run
Comments: ouch! so leading up to this ive been hurt and probly ran about 8 miles the past 4 weeks total so i knew it wasnt gonna be good. my legs felt fresh off the bike but i could definitely tell that my calf was still sore and that i hadnt run in forever! running fitness just wasnt there so it was basically a battle the whole time. i wasnt hurting really until mile 9 but from there to the finish was tough and i even walked 3 times to get my hr down and chill. walked all but the last aid station so that i could drink and stay hydrated but every time i slowed down my legs started to cramp so i had to keep moving. talked to lots of people while i ran to keep my mind occupied and asked them if the 5k was almost done lol that got a good kick out of lots of them. i said, man im never listening to my friends who told me this was a 5k again!! poured my redbull into a cup of ice at mile 4 and it was delicious and gave me a good boost for a little while but i could have used an iv of it for those last 5 miles lol. with about 2 miles to go i realized that i still could break 5:30 so i sped up a little and then pushed it hard the last mile and finally got to the finish. i thought that run was never gonna end!! finished up in 5:29:34. What would you do differently?: not much i could do with being hurt and not running for forever. il be better prepared and ready to race for the next one! Post race
Warm down: gathered up all my junk, gave a piece of pizza to major david roselle, barely survived the 8 minute storm that forced the reace to be cancelled??? and then hung out with my new favorite group of triathletes from outside the turbo donkeys, texas iron (texasiron.net) we had a blast hanging out with them the rest of the day and then went out to dinner, packed up our junk in the dark and went to visit our buddy bill at the the holiday inn again so we wouldnt get hailed on over night. after 13 hours in the car on monday due to all of iowa being a puddle i am happy to be back :) What limited your ability to perform faster: injured leg the past monthish. lack of swimming. Event comments: great race + awesome people + ridiculous fun = we'll be back! Last updated: 2008-06-11 12:00 AM

Drove down to lawrence from wisconsin all day thursday and had quite the road trip including riding down the highway wearing an aerohelmet and goggles, visiting the chrysler-jeep manufacturing plant, paying idiot taxes, and making 85 stops to pee. finally got in around midnight only to find out our hotel reservations were for next week...doh! but luckily our good buddy bill was able to hook us up and we promptly passed out. on friday morning we went to perkins for breakfast and then craig won our trip mascot from the vending machine...lol...and we proceeded on towards clinton lake. when we got close amy and i discovered that craig had not written down where we were suppose to camp haha and so we talked to the county sheriff for awhile and he helped us out. when we got to the park at 11 we figured out that the office was closed until 2pm so we had no idea where we were suppose to stay but luckily i spotted the nametags on each campsite post so we started driving circles around the campgrounds reading each little post lol until we found the site where we were at and set up all our junk! we checked out the lake and went for a swim to the first buouy and decided that it was really far and that swimming is dumb...yeah, i need to swim more. by the time we were done swimming the expo had started and so craig and i did check in and we convinced aj that it was a good idea for her to race :) then we spent a bunch of money on stuff with mdots on it and got out finishers shirts...weird huh? good thing they handed them out early though...haha...anyways we met up with jazzwithnumbers and had a blast and i did a short bike ride out to the iron cross and back. on saturday we did another ride out to the ironcross and down the big hill on the first out and back. alaina and i went out to the top of the next hill and turned around to meet back up with the other 2 and then cruised home. dang that girl can fly up hills, impressive! we did another small swim in the afternoon and kept drinking about 80 waters per hour and peed every 30 minutes all day long in order to avoid dehydration lol...after another blast of a day we colapsed in our tents and were ready to get moving for this little race deal!
woke up at 430am for a bagel with peanut butter and a banana and took all of our stuff which was pre packed the night before down to transition. dropped off the extra stuff we didnt need back at camp, covered ourselves in the protective extra layer of spf 50, thats right 50!, so we wouldnt turn into fried travis's hehe, grabbed the wetsuits, and hustled back towards the lake. the navy seals parachuted in to start the event which was sweet and then the race began! i watched the pros take off and then did a short little swim to get warmed up and then just tried to get in the race zone while i lined up to start in the last wave.
