Topeka Tinman
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 52m 32s
Overall Rank = 11/172
Age Group = 30-34
Age Group Rank = 1/21
Pre-race routine:

Grapenuts and some fruit for breakfast
drove to race
watched the long course tri start, some dude swam 1100 yards in 11 minutes flat, awesome to watch
Event warmup:

Ran 1/2 mile and stretched
tried to not be nervous
Swim
  • 04m 49s
  • 300 yards
  • 01m 37s / 100 yards
Comments:

Started on outside and swam to first bouy really well, only 1 or 2 yellow caps ahead of me,
mass confusion at turn back, course briefing was wrong, lifeguards on course corrected it, basically there was an extra turn bouy that wasn't needed
started pushing pace after turn cause I was so close to front of heat and fell behind on breathing, reduced effort to catch breath but just started pushing pace again, (pace & form discipline!), finally flipped over and swam back crawl last 100, held position but required huge effort, finished with 165bpm heart rate
What would you do differently?:

more open water swimming (SM Park has been closed from contaminated runoff)
pacing: I can maintain breathing during freestyle but can't catch breath if I overexert
Transition 1
  • 01m 29s
Comments:

very tired coming out of water, wanted to lay down and sleep
had jersey and number on under wetsuit
threw on socks, 3 velcroe straps per shoe, helmet and start running with bike
What would you do differently?:

Bike location wasn't ideal but not too bad for T1
I can't get much quicker in T1 without putting feet in shoes on bike but my shoes aren't going to do that very well
Bike
  • 22m 39s
  • 8.24 miles
  • 21.83 mile/hr
Comments:

course was crowded with long, du, & team bikes
1 dude passed me up a hill like I was standing still
I passed a guy who passed me back, I caught back up by the finish and came out ahead from transition
didn't feel like I was climbing well, avg speed was down from Heritage
might have been windier than I though
strong effort at end of bike kept heart rate up over 160
What would you do differently?:

had watered down gatorade in bottle, next time only water, cotton mouth the whole way from sugar in Gatorade
Transition 2
  • 00m 52s
Comments:

my towel was on top of running shoes, nothing eventfull
better location would have been nice here
What would you do differently?:

might buy some of those speed laces things and save 10 seconds tying knots
Run
  • 22m 40s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 07m 17s  min/mile
Comments:

legs felt strong coming out of transition but I was winded
early course was crowded with all speeds of runners and bikes
1 mile water station was at 8+ minutes, walked a few steps to get a good drink and wash Gatorade starch out of mouth
cop car was driving through cones at out and back turnoff, kid ahead of me missed it, I ran in the ditch, cornerworkers were oblivious, I yelled at kid and he got back on course 50 yrds behind me
#419 came on strong last half mile but held him off finished strong, too strong
What would you do differently?:

stop drinking gatorade on bike
I think a little more training at race pace would go a long way
pace was 36s per mile slower than Heritage, didn't push hard enough during race as demonstrated by sprint at finish
Post race
Warm down:

walked around and called my lovely wife to let her know I didn't drown

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Not much, 1st in age group was better than expected (i guess I was technically 3rd, 1 and 2 placed overall so not in age group rankings)
I think a better race weight would be under 180 lb, not 190
arrive earlier to secure a coveted good transition spot
swim will kick my butt on a longer course unless I can relax and swim freestyle the whole way
room for improvement on run

Event comments:

Not anywhere near as well organized as Heritage
Athletes beware, you alone are responsible for knowing routes, saw course issues on swim, bike, and run
felt bad for DQ'd long course bikers, turn signs marked long or short or cornerworks where long and short routes divert would have been nice, but how hard is it to look at the map first?
